Yep, very cool!
backwards compatible with Blu-ray
Is Blu-Ray even the standard yet? Its cool, no doubt about it, but the problem is that people wont even get to buy the "latest standard" before its already outdated
Technology today is moving so fast, that its kind of scary actually

:nono: It's Sony. The Kings of Fraud! Anybody for Betamax? How about a nice rootkit? Maybe a PS3? How about the Plagerized Copy of Halo they just started advertising?
This company is about nothing but getting in the pockets and scamming people out of their money, and once they do, they could care less whether you have problems, or whether the item you just bought is obsolete 1 month after you get it. It's their plan. They count on obsolete hardware so they can try to get the cosumer to buy the next obsolete scam they hack out.
This Company is also in the pockets of RIAA and the MPAA, and those 3 together have engaged in some of the most unethical and undehanded tactics there are. The rootkit stunt they pulled is just one example that most people have heard of.
If we left it up to Sony, and if people keep suporting them enough, there is gonna come a day when you will be able to do nothing without pony'ing up more money, and getting their permission, and your Multimedia/Gaming/Uber machine you love so much will be in their full control.
Sony needs to take some lessons in ethics from the FO Community here. People are not gonna allow a rogue company like that telling them what they are and are not gonna do with their own property. Sony, GO AWAY...you are a PEST!
It was actually the public that killed Betamax not sony the VHS tapes won because there were more VHS videos available. Also VHS was always better than Betamax anyway. On the issue of Blueray its won because of the PS3 no doubt about it but its a level above current DVDs and provides more space for data. A 1 terrabyte disc is cool imagine if that were all scenery for a sim you would have alot more detail than FSX its quite cool having that much space. My problem with blueray is its a step backwards from severals areas firstly the disc is open and exposed and vulnerable to scratches if it were encased in a cartridge it would better protect the disc. Secondly the blueray players are quite stupid design compared to a dvd recorder with hard drive. Ideally a next generation media should be rewritable and with a hard drive otherwise its not better than whats already available.(should also have a sattelite HD reciever as minimum spec) As for PCs the whole disc idea is also out dated a better way is zip drive type systems that use less space and have faster access times without the delay of waiting for the cd to speed up. I think a terrabyte cd is cool though but the day of cds should have been over yesterday.

Sony does make some good products... Their TVs and VCRs sometimes last 20+ years! ... and they offer good quality.
But other than that I agree with what you say. When I was in electronic business, I never sold their cameras and their bullshit "memorystick" crap. They are trying to get as close to monopolism as they can without legally touching it... God only knows how many customers I had that felt like they HAD to buy a Sony camera because their Sony TV or laptop ONLY had a memorystick reader. That's one example, and some people did fall for it. Personally I don't even like their cameras....
But that's not the only problem, their cameras, memories and other components were always twice the price of other standardized material.
I was way depressed when blue ray won over HD DVD... yea it is better, but it being Sony really worried me with their way of doing business and forcing expensive shit down people's throat.
I don't know if I really want to see them go away. They make quality products for the most part. I would gladly buy a Sony TV next time I'm buying one; not because I want to support them. But because I want to get a quality product and save my own ass. But a TV would be one of the only things I would buy from them.
So I don't think they should go away, but I want to see their management change. They do need to stop being thieves...

eh? I don't necessarily buy into all the other stuff, but Subs, your take on beta/vhs is completely wrong.
Beta was the technically superior format (TV studios continued to use it for years for that reason), the reason it got killed is because the way Sony licensed it, you could only buy Beta through them, they tried to control the market, VHS came out and although technically inferior it was available from a myriad of companies was more competitive and that is why the public went to VHS.
Well firstly Sony was responsible for Betamax and they lost against JVCs VHS format. Now for those who think Betamax was better than VHS just remember the tapes were only for 1 hour compared to VHS tapes of 3-4 hours. And that was the main reason it lost out to VHS I can't quite remember the other technical resons why VHS is better I did have an instruction on how the things work the technical aspects of the format.
other reasons were:
A multitude of technical drawbacks hurt Betamax in its competition with VHS. The main issue with the format in the early days of the North American market was recording time. The original prototypes shown to Matsushita used a linear tape speed of 40 mm/sec. The technology of the day needed that speed due to the 60 micrometer heads employed. Management had also told engineering to deliver a cassette about the size of a paperback book. Sony engineers and management decided that since one hour was acceptable to the U-Matic's buyers, it was acceptable for Betamax as well, and made a small cassette practical. They would find that home buyers wanted longer run times than professional U-matic users.
When, in 1976, RCA introduced a VHS recorder capable of storing 4 hours on a standard T-120 tape, Americans and Canadians flocked to the longer run time, as it was perfect for recording the evening primetime schedule or afternoon football games. Sony immediately realized that 1 hour was not sufficient and introduced Beta-2 and Beta-3 speeds, but the smaller form factor limited maximum record time to only 5 hours due to the smaller cassette; roughly half the time that a VHS cassette could hold.
The other thing is VHS also had built in remote timers and record pause etc Betamax never had that and got left behind. Same could also be said about Blueray if you look at my last post they made a Blue ray player what is this the 70s who needs a player? Definately have made the technology for the device over simplified they are quite lucky that at least the PS3 had Blueray or else it would still be competing against HD-DVD.
....and so begins the end of individual freedoms and corrosion of our consitution.

Blu-ray-R and -RW media is insainely priced. Just think what a 1TB media would cost? They're price fixing the blank media to keep piracy down, but it effects everything else because of it. $/GB pricing is still in the CD/DVD method of figuring it out. That's gotta change before Blu-ray makes it anywhere in the PC world. There is no logical reason why a BD-R disk should cost $10-$25 each. The companies pressing out those blanks have gotta be milking in the cash on every single sale.

So, I guess some never learn, Blu-Ray != Sony.
Just because they're the prime advocaters and promoters doesn't mean that it's THEIR format.
I'm SO good damn tired of having to educate every Sony hater out there.
And secondly, BD IS the best next gen disc format, I never really understood the whole "but BD's copy protection is really evil", so WHAT? You BUY movies, not download them from the internet, not that it matter since the copy protection has been hacked for months now.
People only hate sony because it's fashionable right now, they promote their own media, who wouldn't? I f were a corporation I'd easily take the chance of promoting my own formats among customers because that's how standards are made, ALOT of ppl use it, that's how VHS won, and that's how BD won.
Panasonic TV's had a SD port on the front and uses SD as chip media, are they evil as well for not having a 10-format media reader on the front?
And then we have the MS fanboys who hate the PS3 because it's a threat to the xbox, it's till a great gaming machine, excellent at playing BD and DVD and does a good job at being a HTPC if you set up a media server...
P.S Halo isn't the most innovative game out there, so calling killzone 2 a plagiat of halo is just ... wrong.

So buy a PS3, and use it to fold proteins when you aren't watching Blu-Ray movies or playing games =)

Blank DVDs and CDs also started off at that price its not until they mass produce the media that the prices come down.

There has yet to be a copy protection that hasn't been broken. So, Blu-ray copy protection is a moot point. The problem is the price point for the burners and blank disks. I could care less about the movie studio issues or console fanboys. All that drama is what is screwing up the price point and adoption of the technology. I just wish they'd get over all that nonsense and ramp up production.

Which they will when demand goes up, and demand is going up, BD tech outsold DVD tech last week in japan.

There is no problem with promoting your own product, and neither is there for trying to "standardize" something. I'm not a Sony hater. I've lived with sony gadgets around me ALL MY LIFE. Hell the monitor I'm looking at right now is a 3 year old 19inch Sony having failed 0 pixels.
What bothers me is them putting their finger on 1 single product and pushing for ridiculous prices. Their replacement proprietory items are always double the price of anything else. Their memories that I used to deal with were always double the price of all the rest at the same capacity, and with ridiculous margins. I guess you can argue that when you buy a sony, you're committing to their brand and their policies. Whatever they're doing obviously works, and if I don't like it, I shouldn't buy it. However, their way of doing things does get quite frustrating to me from time to time.
Here's the thing tho; ANYTIME you eliminate competition for a company, they start milking you. That's simply the truth. Them price fixing their BR media is one prime example... Tell me, do they even have 1 single competition for their BR? I think not, and that's how I think we feed ourselves gladly to the shark. I really don't know what to say about this one.. They came up with BR, I guess they do get to set the price. So they're not going against any laws, or rules... But they're not being very morally considerate/humane about marketing, realizing that they're the ones in control. So I guess I'm back to their management and how I dislike it very much. I will tell you this tho, company's with low morals and public relations always dig their own graves...
Lets put it this way, I would have been MUCH happier if Toshiba, or Phillips came out with BR instead of Sony; even if everything was the same way and they had no competition...

It's not what they are doing...it's the unethical way they do it. My last Sony product was bought many years ago.
I will not be buying anymore of their Fad's, and the sooner they commit commercial suicide (which they are doing a great job of) the better it will be for us end users.
