It rewrites alot of files. It has alot of security fixes and bug fixes. It also adds one substantial update that I know of...blackhole detection to detect routers that are dropping packets.

My systems seem to be a bit snappier with it, but the jury is still out on that until I work with it a little more.

This update is ***highly*** recommended to stay current with the latest security fixes. I'm sure it's also required so that you can update in the future.

SP3 includes all previous security issues. It's compatible with SP1, and SP2 verssions of Windowsw XP. This update is for ALL Windows XP machines including Pro, Home, Media Center, and all the -N editions.

Thanks for the heads up. It gives me an excise to make a new XP SP3 slipstream CD, wipe the drive and clean up my machine a bit. :)

If you want to do this, that's the way I did it before some years back with SP1.

You won't need SP 1 or 2. The SP 3 has all the cumulative updates, so if you have a Original XP Disk like I do, all you need is that and SP 3.

I said earlier the jury was still out, but after flying flights this week and a mission lastnight online, I can honestly say that on my computer it is working great, and seems smoother. I have found no bugs to date.

AMD Owner Beware of SP3. There seems to be a problem related to power management for Intel by default that prevent AMD CPU owner to boot, even in safe mode after SP3 install. I would wait a bit before jumping to SP3. maybe wait SP3.x hotfix!!!

I'm an AMD user and have no problems at all with SP3. It has installed uneventfully and I haven't noticed any changes in daily usage (to better or worse).

I had 2 pilots at Multiviper say the same thing last night to me. He was running a new AMD, and another was using and Athlon.

What's the particulars on this? Are only certain types of AMD hardware affected?

OH NO! Wait a minute. I just saw the source...the Inquirerer. :nono:

Not exactly the most trustworthy of sources. Anything from Microsoft on this? I would take anything from the Inquirerer as rumor. It's notorious for spreading some really bad info in the past.

HP Machines only.........

I did a bit of reading on this and it seems to be a Power Issue with certain AMD Machines. I have read that it affects HP machines only and have read the contrary also. I'm starting to belive that it is only proprietary becasue the guys that I have talked to running AMD's are not having issues. Most of them build their own machines so it's starting to look like that may be the case.

This is why I've always build my own machines. It avoids alot of issues with proprietary stuff causing issues like this. It also allows me to OC and pick the stuff I want.

I'm starting to seriously believe this was a HP Blunder...not a MS blunder.
