So I'm having this problem in pretty much all my games. Its been going on for a while but it wasn't a big deal in some games, but now its very frequent and annoying in a lot of my newer games.

What happens is everything is great in the game for about 2 minutes, then the computer freezes for about 30 seconds... the music or whatever sound is there continues but stutters twice in the 30 second period... then one of three things happen:

1: In some games, everything comes back and working again, but with FPS cut in third until I minimize, and maximize again and we're good and going.

2: In some games, everything comes back after 30 seconds with no apparent FPS problems.

3: In some other games, if I don't try Alt-tabbing a few times (even though everything is frozen at the time) the problem gets tenfold, blue screen of death flashes and the computer restarts itself...

Then the game works for another 2 minutes, and this happens again

I tried re-installing my display driver and DX-9 and the problem was significantly reduced and almost eliminated for about one day, and I'm having the problem again... just maybe not as frequent as before... when it was every one minute...

PLEASE HELP! This is really driving me nuts! :smash

PS. I also tried disabling the network and turning off all security.. but the problem continued to exist.

A few of the games affected: Ghost Recon 2 (case 2), Rainbow Six Vegas (case 2), Crysis (case 1), and NFS Pro Street (case 3)

I've also tried looking at the system loading log (in task manager) after the event and it indicated no abnormal load/unload during the "freezing age"..

did you try re-installing CPU and Chipset driver?
what is your video cards temperature?
is your PSU reliable one?
is your memory reliable one?
did you try re-install OS?

Have not tried re-installing my CPU and Chipset drivers. I'm gonna go look for updates.
The only temp I've been monitoring so far has been my CPU, system and PWM temps and they've all been fine. CPU's been in the mid to high 40s and that's not really bad.
I have a Thermaltake 480W PSU... I also have a nice UPS unit for my computer.
OCZ Platinum memory ... so that should be good too.
And as far as the OS goes, well I was hoping to solve the issue without having to re-install OS... but I guess that'll be one of my last options.

My video card usually runs around 57C under high loads, but I'll check that again for you..

PS. the OS install is probably only 5 months old right now...

You might try looking at the PCI latency of the bus and/or devices. Make sure they are getting enough time to do things but not more than try really need. Most high end video and sound cards may require a PCI latency of 128 to perform properly. You can change PCI latency through the BIOS.

Go into DXdiag and try moving the sound acceleration slider down one notch. Try in game...try them all. Don't skip any. Do them all before preoceding. Then if that doesn't cure it (in them ALL), go back in and move the slider down one more notch. Continue that cycle, again, checking in game/sim in them ALL, until the problem is cured. If it's not, put it back where it was and report back here what you found.

Leave mobo chipset drivers and all that kind of stuff alone until you do the simple things first.

I messed something up while playing with my settings and my CMOS is cleared now and I'm running on Fail-safe. I'm gonna have to go plug in all the variables in so my games and stuff can start functioning normal and then I'll report back for more trouble shooting. Just give me a day or so and I'll be back here with the results to all the things you mentioned...

From what you say, it would look like a software problem to me. Maybe a task that is run periodically or something similar (antivirus, resident desktop search engines, etc.) Do you have a clean OS?

Whatever, as a first step I'd try running something like ad-aware, your antivirus, etc, and perform a full system defrag. In addition you could run a register cleaner, like Eusing (that is free), an see if the problem persists.

CCLeaner is also a great freeware program. I've used it alot, and it's safe. It won't delete anything you really need. You may need to relogin when you come to a message board such as this one, but that's nothing. It'll delete cookies and things like that. It won't screw up your reg or anything like that.

Sorry to hear you had issues lastnight. Clearing the CMOS will put you back at default safe settings, so don't worry. Your fine right now. If you were OC'd you will have to put those back. No biggie. I'm a hardware oriented person, and like that end of it. Sound Accell and Creative Cards can cause some serious isues...they've gotten really bad about that lately, and they broke their Vista drivers on purpose to make people buy new hardware, so that's why I went down that road first. Lots of people have had that problem, and it's not something you generally go into and is why I brought it up. It's a PITA is what it is.
