Hi Michael. I read this article yesterday and I find I agree very much with the author on what's the "best bang for the buck". Here's the link:

Very useful. I'm looking to upgrade too. But someone told me Dells have a deal with microsoft that make some "unregistered" software difficult to run.

I always built my own machines. Never felt much for Dell or any other pre-build machine.

I put in and on it what I want, when I want and where I want.

I liked it when i laptop broke I just put it into a box and a few days later it came back, I don't have time for the hassle anymore in troubleshooting comp problems. I spent over 500 bucks on replacing parts thinking it was something else that was wrong when at the end it was something else. If dell just shows up and fixes it, i have no problem with that. Forgot the long waits on the phone and dealing with the manufacturers...I like to keep it simple.

A few things to remember:

-The latest Core2 Duo should work just fine with the games around today. I would wait a bit more for the quad core CPUs to mature and the games to catch up. If you do rendering or use other multi CPU/code aware applications, the story is different.

-Take time to check out the new Radeon HD 3870 X2 video card from ATI/AMD. It looks very promising and will continue to surprise as the drivers are updated.

-Get 4 gigabytes of RAM only of you plan to install 64 bit Windows. A 32 bit version of Windows will only use up to 3 gigabytes. I would always max my RAM if possible and in many cases for games, RAM influences the game more than the number of CPU cores. Also always explicitly check the website of the motherboard you plan to purchase. Quality motherboard makers always publish a list of RAM products that work optimally with their motherboard.
