View Full Version : Do I need to buy 8800GT with 1GB memory?
All of sudden, my monitor stopped. I thought Vista bug but I reallized it's a hardware crash.
I even can't see BIOS message from my monitor.
I took out Video card and RAM to check which one causes this problem.
Finally, I think my Video card is deal without any reason. Actually, I had a problem to play 3D game, so I had to down bus memory clock.
Too a long story shot, I will buy a new video card.
I will buy a 8800GT video card but I wonder which one is better between one with 512MB memory and one with 1GB one.
Do I need to buy 1 GB one to play Fighter OPS, might a memory eater?

The 8800GT is the best card out there right now! It rivals the 8800GTX (which costs almost twice as much) in performance! Get one that has higher clockspeed (I think they come in 625Mhz, 650Mhz, 675Mhz and 700Mhz out of the box). Don't worry so much about how much memory is onboard - just get one that has 512Mb. The clockspeed of the GPU, memory and shaders are more important!
I'd recommend the eVGA cards!
I know Pacman posted somewhere about his 3rd party fan assemlby that he bought for his new card. You can't go wrong buying a 8800GT card right now and you can overclock them too, add an aftermarket fan for cooling and only spend half as much as you would on a GTX card... Definitely the best "bang for the buck"!
I couldn't be happier with mine!

Yep, agree with that! Both Pacman and I purchased the XFX 8800GT 512. Definitely the way to go!

YH i got the GTS 320mb version when it came out i tell you my computer is preety crappy and that boosted everything up a notch.
I also have the 512 MB 8800GT graphics card, and it's amazingly fast! It seems to be the best trade off between price and performance, and it even gives the more expensive GTS cards a run for their money. I recommend going with EVGA because of their step up program and their warranty terms (which cover overclocking).
Well just to let you know. The 8800 GTS is better, considering it has an extra letter on the end of GT...
I know a sad attempt at showing you guys up =)

Only if its the new 512mB GTS with the new GPU. Ive got a 320mB old style 8800GTS and when I built a new computer for a mate I stuck his 8800GT in my machine for a couple of days. The 8800gt kicked the crap out of my GTS. I really couldnt believe the difference. I kept it just long enough to finish those last levels on crysis before i had to give it back.......

Thats why i got myself two of them. SLI is hot, though, i think i will run them separately for a 3 display setup (1x 23" and two 19") BHawthorne got me hooked:bigsmile:
What about the professional cards? FX 5500 and so on?

Yup very sad, lol. Simply because all benchmark tests prove your attempt wrong. :wink2:
And TBH the 8800GT is the best buy I ever did.
i think you guys have it all wrong. Graphics Card numbers are like golf scores.
My 6800 Ultra pwns you all.
ps moved to a more appropriate forum.
Thanks for your interest in this matter.
Thanks to your advise, I decided to buy 8800GT 512MB version.
I have found out a lot of stuff about 8800GT 512MB version from my favorite hardware forum.
Unfortunately, I have read a lot of complaints about noisy sound from the video card.
It's very high tone noisy. That's a bad news for me.
So what? I decided to buy XFX 8800GTS 512MB one
Actually I bought it today but.. I feel like I wasted money.
I had a feeling my computer is likely to be turned on today, and I did.
Well... It's turned on.
But there are a lot of video card error logs on Windows Vista.
What should I do with this 8600GTS? Sell it? or keep it for emergency?
Hi all, I guess I need to upgrade my membership back into Area 51.
I just returned from a short tour in Baghdad, stationed at Sather AirBase.
Hoping to see some progress here soon, hopefully 2008 will be the year that FO is finally released :)
Meanwhile, it was time for a PC upgrade, this new rig should run FO :)
I am just putting the finishing touches on my new setup....
Haven't built a PC in a few years, the technology has really improved.
I also chose the EVGA 8800GT 512mb, simply none better, and EVGA has fantastic support. Here is the new rig:
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale CPU
Gigabyte P35-DS4 Ver. 2.1 Mobo
EVGA GeForce 8800GT 512mb VideoCard
Crucial Ballistix DDR2 SDRAM 800 (4GB 1GBx4)
Western Digital Caviar SE16 750GB SATA2 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
SAMSUNG 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA
Rosewill RCR-102 52-in-1 USB 2.0 Black Card Reader
OCZ GameXStream OCZ600GXSSLI 600W PSU
Antec 900 case (black)

bstar07......DO NOT get the 1GB version, it yields no benefit at all resolutions over the 512mb model. The reason being the onboard 256bit can process only so much data and 512mb is more then sufficient to feed it

Thanks for your advice. I bought XFX 8800GTS 512MB one.
I am really satisfied with this video card. No problem to play any PC games
yet but with Company Of Heroes. My vide signal stops in the middle of playing it. It looks like a famous issue with this Ndivia 8800 series.
