View Full Version : Fan Speed
Hey guys. I am getting a new graphics card, actually ordered it tonight. And I am trying to get a general idea of what people are doing to not fry their cards.
The 8800 GTS from what I read has a interface in which you can turn up or turn down the fan speed, so I was wondering if there are any other users out there that may help. If you have any kind of card with this option let me know. I do not want to fry this one like I did my 7900 :red:
Thanks for the help!

I have the GTX and it runs a little hot, but I think most of the 8000 series cards do. The stock fan should be sufficient unless you plan to overclock it. With stock cooling and clocks you should not overheat your card.

Yes, it's controlled via RivaTuner. Download it at www.guru3d.com. You can tweak most any card setting in that free utility, including fan speeds.
I just bought a 8800GT and it runs extremely well. Although I have already bought an HR-03 plus silent cooling solution, but I'll be putting a high speed case fan over it. That should keep it in line.
TBH seeying that the GT is faster then the GTS it would have been a better buy though.
yup the GTS runs quite hot. So does the whole 8800 series. Though i read somewhere that the 2nd revision will have 65 nm chips thus running cooler at a lower energy consumption. Good news for overclockers
BTW if you are buying a custom cooler for it in general the HR-03GT is a very good choice. Although it is pretty big it offers excellent cooling.
I accidently ordered the HR-03 plus for the GTS/ GTX series. I'm trying to contact them now to send me the parts needed so I can attach it to my GT.
The main body is the same, only the RAM cooling ribs are of a different size and the main attachment is different.

Maybe he ordered one of the new 8800GTS based on the G92 chip.
Yes its the one with the G92, and thanks for the help,
I might have to look into getting one of those fans pacman, could save me some money!
thanks guys. :thumb:
The cards are highly overclockable. If anybody that is in posession of an 8800GTS or GTX is interrested in a good performance cooler lemme know.
They told me there are too many differences to just ship some parts over. I have to buy the whole GT pack. Which I will since these coolers are absolutely great at what they do.
They are a little big...but then again that is what makes them good in getting rid of the heat.

I have a 768 8800gtx and it will run rather hot 130-135 degrees.I checked it after playing FSX at 170 degrees.I downloaded RivaTuner and set the fan at about 50%,now it dint get over 130 degrees.
thanks for your fan speed.
Anyone know what is considered to hot for the card??
Dunno about he GTS or GTX but apparently the GT can run up to 100°C according to the factory with 92°C being the safe zone.
I have it running around 62°C while playing Crysis 16x12 max'd out.
It came with 600/ 900 settings and at the moment with stock cooler at 70% it is running 630/ 920. Once the new cooler is installed I'll proabably try and get more out of it.

Yep, GPUs can withstand some pretty crazy load temps. I remember first seeing upwards of 75-80C being norm in the 6-series Geforce stuff. Over time I've gotten used to it. I'm still using a 6800U in one machine that has shown up to 80C for years now.
I do not want to start a new thread here so I will leech off of my own.

I received my 8800 GTS today in the mail, waited a while to install it as I have had a long day in school. She fits in nicely, no problems with getting her in place, from all the reviews I read its really quiet, which was not a issue with me from the beginning.
I installed the drivers, messed around with RivaTuner, failed but Ill explore it later on.
I was excited to see what my new graphics looked liked, so I was quick to adjust my settings in my nVidia control panel and quick to launch of LOMAC.
I joined my friends server, went into the payload options and this is what I got. Kind of disappointed but I know that it is not the card, it is me!

I loaded up the game to get a nice shader issue, I do not know if it is due to lockon 1.1a or what but here are some examples.

thats when it hit me, I figured 'ah the 14 is not that good of a model, it must be because its made in the USA, so I checked out a the Russian giant and same thing.

So my settings are the following:
(2) 250 gig Raptor Drives
(2) gigs of corsair RAM
GeForce 8800 GTS 512mb
Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe
AMD athlon 64 processor 3700+

any ideas?
Turn off full shadows. ED hasn't fixed the incompatibility with the newer drivers (both nVidia and ATI).
Check the drivers. There is an option where you can set for best performance or best quality. These settings overwrite your ingame settings. Maybe somethings wrong there. I prefer "let the application decide" because it allows for more fine tuning
alright. Fixed the shadow problem, thanks rugg.
Kind of disappointed though, my graphics in lockon suck. When I had my 7900 it was better, the weird thing is, is that LOMAC is the only game this happens to me with, everything is awesome.
So I don't know what is wrong.
I use 1.12a
Updated the to the newest drivers
Set everything to application controlled
Turned off Full shadows (beer to rugg!)
