View Full Version : Defrag Question

Hey everyone, I just got through installing FSX and a few other programs, and I bought O&O Defrag to do my defragging from now on. I did a few defrags with O&O, and I get the report here: http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a369/Mobius1_MWI/OO/?action=view&current=mobesproblem.jpg

It says I have 42.80% fragmentation, and it shows that all the fragmented files are 'System Volume Information' files, which are the files used by System Restore (if I'm not mistaken). Now, I don't really want to turn system restore off, and from what I understand, it uses 10-12% of your disk space to store these files, which would be about 72GB on my system, which apparently can't be defragged. My question is, is this going to cause my system to have to slog through this crud, or can I just ignore that in future defrags? I really don't like having it tell me that I have over 40% fragmentation.

Thanks.

P.S. I'm running Vista x64.

fragmentation is independent from the application that caused it. Your system will have to gather up the pieces of data.
Try to right-click your partition --> clean up --> ... options --> system restore information: delete all backups but leave the newest one
You can also reduce the allocated HDD memory size under options in your system restore dialogue.
Then try to defrag again

Thanks Deckerd, but I forgot to mention that I'm running Vista x64, and that option doesn't come up.

No problem, thanks for trying. Someone at another forum told me how to do it, so it's all good now. :wink2:

Make sure if you have imagefiles from virtual drives somewhere..... in this cases you will get this kind of analysis....

Go to Accessories, system tools.. disk cleanup.
Check EVERYTHING.. click ok. (especially the hyperfil.sys...)
This will free up 2+ gigs...
clear out your temp caches.. winnt\temp & user\appdata\temp and internet temp....
Reset your restore amount to something more realistic.. 5-10gig..
(i don't even waste my time with it and I turn it off..... I just image the HD...)

Now you should be able to defrag better....
