View Full Version : Your Favorite IL-2 1946 Aircraft?!
Hi Guys!
As I get some sparetime on the Weekends, I like to fly a little bit of IL-2. (If anyone is interested in some online flying, let me know).
My current favorite is the Me 109 G-10 and the IL-10. Both very good aircraft concerning handling and weaponsdeployment! I really love the solidness of the IL-10 in flight!!! It brings you home no matter what, too. The Me 109 G-10 has a good engine (unlike the G-14 or K-4 , where the lifespan of an engine is very limited due to end-of-war production constraints) and good maneuverability. I had the chance to see a '109 in flight for the first time about 3 weeks ago, the sound is incredible!

My favorites are the Focke Wulf FW190D-9, the Lockheed P-38L Lightning and the F4U-1C Corsair.
The Dora-9 is my current favorite fighter as it is fast as a thief and has the 190's typical quick roll rate. Plus, it takes a little skill to employ effectivly as its armament isn't quite as powerful as other 190's.
The P-38 is very fast strait and level and carries a heavy warload. Plus when it gets an engine shot off it still has another to get it home. I love using the P-38 on online to clear out the AAA from target areas so the bombers can ingress and egress the target area unmolested.
The Corsair is one of my favorites as it carries an even heavier ground attack warload than the P-38 (and the B-25 for that matter) and is a pretty potent fighter as well. It is also a challange to land as it is also carrier capable.:thumb:

I enjoy the Spitfires and shooting down the German fighters
All depends on what I want to do.
Varies from P-51's, spit variants for air to air.
P-38's and Tempest for CAS.
B-25's for industrials targets high level bombing.
I usually only fly on the allied side on spit vs 109.
Been while though.
Dirk
I like the P-63 C-5 at the moment, as well! Very fast, very nice to fly! I can take out almost anything with it, has problems with the rollrate at high speeds though..
Flip
Yup, my favorite when I go bomber hunting.
The Ju-88's are hard to take out with a spit, and especially with a P-51.
A P-38 with cannons is another option, but the damage model is crappy...and half of the time 1 or 2 hits from the gunners disables your aircraft.
The '63 is perfect, the cannon really wrecks them. And against a fighter the cannon is devestating with 3 sometimes even 1 hit.
Very much agreed on the roll rate at high speeds though.

Agree, too. The P-63 seems to be an aircraft designed for high speeds, but the maneuverability is not so good at the high speeds as mentioned. I guess its the Boom-Zoom Tactic (or the like) where you make passes on your opponent and use the speed to your advantage as you can gain altitude quite quickly, then coming back down on your target.

Oh I have NP going in a slower knife fight with any axis aircraft in the P-63...if handled correctly most axis pilots end up biting the dust.
For the bombers it is off course better to come in high from it's 2 and 10 o'clock positions and smack the engines from the top. Strafe the wing/ mid fuselage/ other wing.
With a P-51 I usually go for the cockpit.

we should fly sometime :)
I'm on Spit vs 109 right now. Also on the TS.

For an "allround" fighter, i'd say the F4U-1D Corsair. I wish we had the F4U-4 Corsair though!
I also like to fly the spit, but it has short legs.. I'd probably go for either the Corsair or the Hellcat, as they can handle pretty much "anything" you throw at them at medium altitudes (I dont think they'd function too well in bomber escorts in the ETO.)
But basically, as long as me and my wingman knows the Beam defence maneuver (popularly known as the Thach Weave) , we're unbeatable! :lol

is that a server in Hyperlobby or Ubi? Also, at what Teamspeak can I reach you once I have time to fly?!
PM me the Info, if you like. Would be cool!

I don't fly very often anymore.
Work has got me tied down..then FO..and my family is taking up the last of my time.
In fact they aren't getting as much as they should lately.
This month will be the roughtest of the year.
You can find all the info here:

rgr, I know what you mean with work, same here! Dont have my own family yet, none in the plans either hehe.

It is a full real server.
Do check the briefing before each mission as they ask for everybody to use the standard skins and correct markings.
They use no tag's at all. Not for friendly, nor for enemy.
IMO it is one of the best servers around for people that want to fly organised. Especially in the weekend it is heaps of fun and ppl really coordinate attacks.
Last night a group of 6 Heinkels was escorted by 3 or 4 Me's.... I don't have to tell you that this is a rare sight on servers.
I was in a mosquito going to bomb some ships. No need to tell you that I dropped my bombs and went down on them with all guns blazing.
We had a blast kicking them down:thumb:

I used to read the briefs on other servers, but nevertheless most people didnt care so I ended that eventually as well. But thats good to hear that there are still people around that want to fly like the way you mentioned. I will stop by some time, I only have Il-2 on my laptop but it runs fine and i got my joystick, so quite hard in a full-real spectrum, but there is no better way to train.

It is a 1946 server.
And they moderate that server with iron hand.
After 3 warnings ppl will simply get kicked, and eventualy banned if they continue to behave badly or if they don't oblige to server rules.
I only fly with my FFB2...more then enough.

Hi Flip or anyone else,
If you are interested in full switch co-ops with full orgianisation from misison briefings to debriefings. Then why don't you pop in and say g'day.
We are running the latest version of Scorched earth online war (a perpetual ongoing war that evolves in real time. and quite frankly one of the greatest additions to the IL2 - 1946 game) and are currently 9 missions in.
We take a serious view to flying and acting as a co-ordinated team. Though a few giggles here and there are also shared. We just ask that you have a decent level of competency and try to perform in a mature manor. - of course training or advice is freely given most nights of the week. (some very talented people)
Our current Scorched earth campaign is New guinea with USA / RAAF against the japanese. A midway campaign soon to start as well.
For those that don't know about scorched earth - here is a quick synopsis of what it does. (you do not need any additional software as scorched earth is hosted on our dedicated server.)
SCORCHED EARTH ONLINE WAR (SEOW)
Is an online mission generator that perpetuates an ongoing war.
Nothing is computer generated as we have an allied commander and an axis commander. Each plots their forces movements in an effort to strive for victory and those movements remain unknown to the opposing commander.
What you come up against online will be a direct effect from the brilliance or deficiencies of the commanders organisation or just pure luck. (You may have a mission where we encounter no or little enemy resistance - on the other hand we may fly into the heart of a full blown task force !!!)
Random weather with weather reports generated and forcasts that may be innacurate.
Real recon where the height of the recon plane affects information gained. (the higher the alt - the greater the recon area but with lesser detailed information and vice versa. Your recon aircraft must return home for the intel to be used)
Factory production, Fuel tracking and consumption for ships, ground units, planes, cities, airbases (this allows you to win a war through attrition instead of destroying all visible forces).
Real resupply where depleted forces can be re-inforced. (Want to move troops or tanks ? INstead of driving / walking them to your front lines. Put them into a transport plane or ship and move them to the next point of call but be warned. The loss of that plane or ship will of course loose all equipment on board.)
damage tracking. If you destroy a bridge in a previous misison, that bridge will still be broken in the next mission until repaired by engineer, or alternatively, by a set amount of time depending on how the campaign is configured. Destroy a plane on the ground, that plane is not longer available and has to be resupplied.
All aircraft have reload / refuel / repair times. (commanders just can't throw up all their forces every mission. Planes take time to rearm and refuel !! So strategy is the key).
Front lines move with the success or failures of each misison.
Full stat tracking in each mission debrief. - To view our stats to date in the new guinea campaign visit http://www.virtual23squadron.com/MP4/index.php and at the top left of the screen click on campaign statistics then click on new guinea (I am sure you can figure it out). There you can find statistics for each mission down to individual pilot statistics.
I could go on and on there is so much more SEOW can do and is nothing short of a stroke of brilliance. Basically its a real war of air, ground and sea forces. Its up to you to win - and what you do MAKES A DIFFERENCE !.
So, if you want to have a go / fancy having a look or just interested, pop on by our forums and say hi. http://raf23sqn.dogfighters.net/
(23sqn is bomber wing and 33sqn is fighter wing - Forums are for both)
Regards,
Bogus
I really like the F4U-1C and the SBD-5(solid little bugger)
