View Full Version : Difference between 64 bit and 32bit Windows?
Hey,
on the other topic I was recommended to use a 64bit Windows with my new PC.
1: because 64bits will show my 4gig Ram, now is only shows 2.25gig.
But the question is, are there other things that a 64bit OS would do better than a 32?
And is there a Windows XP 64bit version???
thx in advance
To your first, Wheels: probably more with a specific 64bit made program (like high renditon graphic software may be), I don't think you can appreciate otherwise the difference.
To your second: this may be more tricky, to the few I can remember MS should have released a 64bit version of XP in the past, but I don't know if it is still available... I'm afraid not, instead.
Hope these above could help you the same.

1: The major difference between 32-bit and 64-bit XP are the drivers. 64-bit XP has less drivers available. If you go to 64-bit XP make sure your hardware has drivers before hand. It is true that 64-bit XP and Vista will see all 4g of your ram though.
2: Yes there are both 32 and 64-bit versions of XP available. Also there are 32 and 64 bit Vista soon to be available at the end of January.
Thanks for the awnsers both :)
About the vista... I'm going to wait with that one, 'cause, all new windows versions have so many bugs in it ... would rather like to wait another year with that one.
And you should do well and wise in doing so, Wheels, most of all because we don't know anything about actual drivers' compatibility with Vista...
... anything good, I mean :wink2:

If you have a lexmark printer of the consumer level, forget having a printer under 64 bit.

I remember when we went from 16 to 32 bit, big difference, Your right about the drivers, I don't believe the Cougar stick has 64 bit drivers available yet, I know it was a problem but don't know if you can get them now. I have 64 bit XP but am using 32 for that reason

k thx, so I'll wait one more year then ;)
Does anyone know what the benefits for FO would be for 64bit over 32bit. Would the 64bit version or mode allow for more features etc?

Nope, I've yet to hear there is even going to be a 64-bit compile yet. It's not like FO will be 64-bit just because the OS you use is.
64-bit is rather hit and miss. About all that is sold anymore are 64-bit cpu's but progress and installed user base is hindered by legacy machines making up a huge chunk of users. I'd focus more on the features that might be lacking or incompatability issues in 64-bit than supposed benifits. If you're willing to take on those issues, some benifits can be had though -- like a larger addressable memory pool. XP-64 has some of the issues that face Vista atm, but not as many issues because it's been out since 2003 or so.
