View Full Version : Space sims?
Do anyone know about any good space sims (games)?
Is Star Wars Galaxies worth checking out, and what is it all about?
well, its not a space sim on its own but, if you have Flight Simulator 9 you could get Captain Sim's space shuttle addon. Its pretty cool if you ask me, check it out. And at the vary bottom, you can click on VC, Exterior, Scenery and so on for Screens.

I hear Orbiter is pretty good, and it's free, so heck, why not give it a try.

Orbiter is great, as long as you get Orbiter 2006 with the extra high-def textures!

I've been playing X3:Reunion alot lately. You need to take lots of time building your business before you can afford to buy the big capital ships and fleets of little ships but once you do, oh boy what a fracas will ensue! Seeing your fleet in combat action is pure eye candy.
I also liked DarkStar One which is much more action and combat with much less trading/business and much less eye candy. Fun without the need to build your empire.

I wouldn't really consider EvE a sim. IMHO, it's a MMO shooter with economy.

EVE is great, once you get into 0.0 sec space the action really starts to heat up :D bring on the dreadnoughts!

EVE is amazing, I spend a **** load of money playing it, and still would like to come back... but have no $$$ for that :lol But it is not a simulation, actually its not even a shooter, its like putting together Homeworld, Frontier, Battlecruiser3000AD and I-War2 with World of Warcraft.
Now if anyone watched the new Battlestar Galactica series, there is something for you, few days ago, demo of freeware Freespace2 modification was released that allow you to fly the Mk.II and Mk.VII Vipers (and Riders in Multiplayer), that game is pretty amazing, and makes you forget its only a shooter. It is extremely hard to shoot anything, because of the fast responses, and velocity that you fly + the only useful weapon are your cannons, that are fixed. In demo there is no cockpit, nor TrackIR support but it will be implemented in the full release. Here are two shots I made in multiplayer of my craft, note when you maneuvering, the thruster are visible to work just as they should:

it is called Battlestar Galactica: Beyond the Red Line (http://www.game-warden.com/bsg/index.html)

My corp lived in 0.0 mining. Had to deal with some zerg gate humping asses between earning all that ISP. I had/have a hulk on 2 idle accounts. Ratting in the new 0.0 space when it came out was was killer cash when refined.
Would be sorta entertaining to put together a 0.0 sec fighterops corp.
How about Earth and Beyond, EA shut it down but the community is creating an emulator I loved this game when it was live

With EA Mythic taking over all the MMO aspects of EA atm, it might be time to ask Mythic to take a look at Earth and Beyond again. They already have taken on OU and TSO along with continuing development of DAoC and WAR. There have been rumors of combo account pricing floating around. Heck, throw in EaB in for the combo accounts.
Speaking of Space SIMS. I want to know why Lucas Arts won't make a new X-wing series games. Those games were awesome, loved those SIMs.
By the way EVE is an awesome game. I like how the skills are set up where you don't have to be logged in to advance in skills.

Well, it's not so much a sim, but the most realistic looking space game I've seen so far is Homeworld 2, pretty nice graphics and plenty of complexity, particularly if you go with Evo, which I suppose is an expansion from h*** (I'm not sure what to call it, my friend has it, not me). If you're more into Star Wars, there's some pretty good fun to be had from Star Wars: Galactic Conquest and the expansion for that his pretty awesome. Strictly talking sims, Orbiter is the only space SIM I can name right now.
For me Elite would have to be one of the best space games ever made followed by the wing commander series and the x-wing series. X-wing alliance was very cool flying craft like the corellian transports and using the turrets.

Didn't Lucas Arts do a xwing addon for Star wars galaxies?

I think so, might of been when they created the "Jump to lightspeed" expansion. Unfortunately I've heard terrible things about the game and tried a 14 day trial and I did not have a very good experience and gave up.

Been playing Eve a lot in 0.0 PvPing lately. I'm getting in my mil comms practice there in teamspeak since I don't sim online.
Take a look at "Privateer Gemini Gold": http://priv.solsector.net/news.htm. If you remember the original privateer running under DOS, it was a space/trade game with a very cool plot and the best atmosphere ever. So if you have a partiality for vintage games, take a look
