Didn't want to hijack the amd fx60 thread, but I've got a similar question.

I've got a AMD 3500+ S939 atm, would it be worth upgrading to an X2 4800+ S939 (AU$330)? Would it give me good value for money? I've got an 256Mb X600Pro that I'm thinking of upgrading to a low end 512Mb card (maybe an X1600Pro) if it's gonna be worth it as well.

I'm holding off any full-system upgrades until the quads get to about what dual cores are now so I might be in for a bit of a wait... ;)

I'd say yeah. I too will be holding off for a while for a large upgrade but it would be nice to go dual core in the mean time.

I currently have a 4000+ but I was struggling to find anywhere that sold a dual core at reasonable prices.

Who is selling those at that price? I could be interested.

Thanks for the reply Cobra.

Computer World (http://www.cworld.com.au/) have it advertised for that price and they have a few stores in VIC, NSW or you can buy online. Normally I get my computer stuff from CPL (http://www.cpl.net.au) but this time they're not the cheapest around ($439).

*EDIT* Actually, scrap that. Just read a few online reviews and it don't sound good... :P Looks like CPL it is, never had any dramas at all with them before. *EDIT*

hhhmmmm

if I have to pay that much i may as well upgrade the mobo and go AM2.

Yeah, there's not much difference in price. Hmmmm...

Have a look here Cobra - lists the best price for each component available on the net (I have found the odd bit cheaper but not too often) - handy site!

http://au.pricespy.biz/

Can get a AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+, dual core, socket AM2, 2.6GHz for $430 from Umart.

I notice that my 4200 I bought a while ago is now half the price...grrrrr!

Shockwave: - I like your online logbook layout - very snazzy. Haven't seen that before.

Thanks, the creator of FalconLog has done a really good job. :)

Well I ended up getting an X2 4600+, A$329 and installed it myself. Good that AMD's have the heat paste already on the heatsinks, peal the plastic and mount it on the cpu, no mess. :)

For what I read it's a proportional upgrade performance for price compared to spending about $1100+ for a whole new Duo system including a mid-end VGA card. AF is running that much smoother and it maaaybe get FPS in the double figures when FO comes out...

whats each core on the 4600 relate to in regards to the singles?

my single is a 4000+.

Shockwave

I'll check... :)

The 4600+ has two 4000's (2x2.4Ghz) but with the same total L2 cache as one 4000+ (1Mb). Not as much difference as with mine, the 3500+ was only 2.2Ghz and 512k L2.

No probs. And I suppose it's not really two 4000+'s, it's two 3800+'s in both clock speed and L2 size.

bringing this one back up as i am revisiting the idea ... but now i cant find any dual core 939 cpu's

can the AM2's fit in a 939 pin mobo?? i thought not but now i'm confused.

never mind ..
939 and AM2 pins are different.

they have phased out dual core 939 cpu's and you have to upgrade to AM2 which i wont waste my time doing.

You'd be better off going with the new intels if you are looking at changing out MB etc.

I am going to upgrade to a FX-60 dual core 939, I have a Asus A8N SLI Deluxe mobo and hope everything plays well together

how expensive is an FX-60 though.

like shockwave, who started this thread I am just hoping for a cheap upgrade from a single core to a dual core. if i'm going to spend major bucks it will be on an intel cpu and new mobo ram etc.

edit: just did a search for a price on FX-60 and I cant find one for sale in Australia online. found an FX-55 for $1359 aus lol.... tell em there dreamin...

 "dreaming" only? Do you like euphemisms, perhaps, it was until too kind by you!
That CPU's exaggerate cost (also here in Italy) was the reason I never thought about purchasing an AMD.

Jackal out.

Yeah, with the money for an FX-60 you can get a full kickass Duo system with much better performance...

Gotta take into account if you already have a socket-939 mobo though. I went from A64 3000+ Winchester to Opteron 165 dual core for dirt cheap. It does 2.7ghz on air for under $150USD. Not bad for 1gbx2 L2 cache. It'll outdo the FX-60 stock.

For awhile I was gonna get the ASUS quadfather mobo and 2 Opti 2210HE F3 steppings, but the F3 (CX) steppings for that chip aren't out yet on newegg yet. They only show the F2 (CQ) steppings atm.

Pardon my ignorance but isnt an Opteron a server CPU.

And if it is ... what exactly does that mean lol. How would a "server" cpu perform different to any other.

The 165 is just a rebadged X2 with 2x1gb cache and locked 9x multiplier. It's pure market speak that call it a server cpu. It uses unregistered DDR ram like any other 939 X2. The 165 has been a cpu of choice for affordable socket-939 upgrades for around a year now.

You'll find that the line between "server" and "entheusiast" has blurred since PCIe mobos came out. Really the only thing that says "server" to me is registered memory, SCA ports and PCI-X slots on a mobo. The processor fills a price point targeting both "server" or "entheusiast" buyers.

It's a very attractive price point when looking at the X2 options on the socket-939, which most are only 2x512k cache. Especially since the 939 optis work just the same as any other 939 processor in something like an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe.

My reasoning:

Opteron 165 Denmark: 2x1gb L2 1.8gb (OCs on air to 2.7ghz) = $149
X2 3800+, 4200+, 4600+: ALL 2x512kb L2 2.0ghz-2.4ghz (OC on air ~2.7ghz too)= $96-$199

2x1gb L2 cache makes it a better chip option than any of the regular 939 X2's. There is no 939 X2 option for 2x1gb that I see on newegg.

cool thanks .... might have to look into some prices down here then.
