View Full Version : IL2/ joystick combination.

I know joysticks are usually a personal prefference.

I used the microsoft FFB2 for IL2 up untill now as I was kind of used to it.
The main issue I have with it is that it is hard to keep the bullets on the targets.
It is just to sensitive and even when adapting the sensitivity in the IL2 setup it doesn't give me the desired result.

What are your experiences with joystick throttle combinations?

Any suggestions?

I was thinking of an X-52.
But I preffer to keep my rudder on the central axis of he stick itself. And AFAIK there is no twist on that stick.

All opinions welcome.

I have got X52 and this is the best joystick which I have ever had. It's very friendly for useres because you can use profile for many games for Lock On, F-4, Il-2 etc. and the X52 is more cheaper than a Cougar sticks.And the X52 contains twist for rudder. I think you can buy this HOTAS without fear. I don't know how expensive is this today but when I had bought one year ago it cost about $115.

pacman the x-52 does have twist i love my x-52 a ver nice stick indeed and the rotators and the slider are awesome for trims and stuff

I still have my Saitek EVO, but I heard only good things about that X52, so go for it if you want to buy new one but wait for the Pro version, it will have centering disk made of metal alloy, so it won't wear to fast, which may be a problem in Saitek sticks (it is in mine). I recommend you also to try out rudder pedals, it is really better that twist handle - flying can be more precise. At first it is weird, but after a week you will see improvement.

Another thing are the joystick setting in game, this is part from my conf.ini regarding joystick axes:

The bold ones are of my X and Y axes, I really recommend this settings.

Now the throttle seems to be set to the precision slider....duh.

Anybody know how to set this thing up please?
Or any good profiles for IL2?

I'd preffer mode 1 for fighters and mode 2 for bombers or something....dunno if that is possible.
And no need to put padlock features on it, I never use it...buttons can be better used for something that is usefull.

Any help appreciated,

Yeah, the same happened with mine X52.

Go in controls settings and set axis of your throtle from slider to the actual throtle...if any problems...+31.............:)

Hahaha, yeah I found another way of doing it.
In the game menu, HOTAS setup and change things there.

Now I'll try and dig into this programming bit.....if I find extra time, lol.

i have an X-45 and i love it! I like the fact that its a Fighting Falcon-ish HOTAS and it has the rudder on the throttle. The only thing that is missing on it is the smooth and easy movement of the X52..wish i could combine that..

This is not really on topic, but figured I might as well post here instead of creating a new thread. So here goes...

I have the Top Gun Afterburner II from Thrustmaster for about two years now I guess. All went fine till I've installed FB+AEP+PF merged pack and came across the folowing problem: for instance, after applying full power and releasing the brakes the aircraft would veer hardly to the left so that I initially have to apply almost full right rudder to counter it and after a while (~5 secs.), when I gain enough airspeed I can keep it under control more easily. Ok, I manage to takeoff fighting the beast like it's a B-29 with both left wing engines at idle or something...:joystick: I get into the air and things get a little easier for me as they are no buildings to hit whilst yawing left to right. I trim it with both rudder and aileron and I tame it, but only till I change the power setting... and then... again trimming.

Now, I know this is not right at all. Yeah, some fighters in WWII were difficult to handle, yeah, there's the gyro effect and all that, but THIS is not right. At first I thought it's an exaggerated gyro effect, so I've took a B-25 (2 engines) and an Me-262 (jet) to the air. Exactly the same thing. I looked closely at the rudder and it seems a little off-center and to the left.:wacko:

I know my stick is fine, as I have no problems in Lock On, Falcon 4 or MSFS. Calibrated the thing time and time again including via the Il-2 Joy Control. I've given up.:nono: Maybe you guys know the cure.:searchme

you must clean the potentiometers in my opinion.

i have same problems in my Cougar then i clean the potentiometers and i working fine.

Can't be my stick. I also deleted the axis asignment for the rudder, do I was supposed to work only by keyboard and it's the same thing. So there's no logic to this, but anyway... I'll try and clean them.
