Just came across another gem at Wright-Patterson. Anyone interested in a F-4C? I noticed Gecko is doing an F-4?

Hey BHawthorne

Nice find!

My project is an A-7D cockpit, no room for an F4. :(

That is a whole lot of bird there. Just the cockpit cut off with the intakes and radome will weigh in at close to 5 tons.

The Phantom is second most modeled cockpit out there. I hope that who ever gets this one doesnt just scrap it.

That's my hope too. Worse case, both the F-16 and the F-4 get scrapped by the same salvage yard. They're in the same auction, different lots. I've been batting around a number of ways of securing the 16. Been in contact with some local people who are giving me insight into a project like this. They did the www.707sim.com project.

Since the 16 is less weight it's probably going to be more managable to take on. I've given thought to bidding outside my realistic budget and accounting for 2/3 of the bid I'll get back from salvaging the hind end. I suppose the same could be done with the F-4, but 19k lbs? That's more than the 7800lb car trailer my family has can handle probaby even with the cockpit cut down. Worse case on the F-16 would be around 1/3 - 1/2 the 9015lbs, which will be no problem for a 7800lb rated trailer. I'd only bid on the F-4 as a backup project, but it would be a shame to see any of them get totally scrapped. Maybe I could contact local metal recyclers around the Dayton area and get a quote for them buying the excess and carting it that off and work it that way. That would save logistics of me dealing with the excess and they probably would be more efficient in chopping up the F-4 of excess weight.

My current $2500 isn't going to go very far in securing either, so I'm looking for "creative" solutions now to the issue(s). Being a full time Mechanical Engineering Technology student, I'm even exploring government grant money to make it my degree's capstone project. I don't hold any remote hope for that though. Ultimately, I'm probably going to have to raise the initial cash myself somehow, then recoup about half in scrapping the excess.

Just a small update. I've entered a bid on the 16 and 4 lot. Please don't bid unless you're serious about purchase. I'd prefer keeping the lot price reasonable.

This airframe has popped up again into auction. Now it's on eBay now. If I recall it ended up going for around $5400 on govliquidation. I'm guessing his wife probably wanted it out of his front yard... :lol
