Hi all, just want to say I think it's great that this sim is coming out and will feature realistic training. This is something that has been missing for years in combat sims .. about a year ago I hooked up with a guy that has similar interest in training and doing things the realistic way. For going on a year now, using various sims most recently Lomac due to it's formations abilities, have been training eachother and some others in a very realistic IPT/UPT some IFF stuff. For example, we've worked out formation standards / rejoins that actually come out to be word for word what Haole wrote in his takeoff standards. We practice turning rejoins, breakouts, pitchouts, lost wingman, BFM, ACM, refueling, BDA checks, fence in / out, tactical form / turns, g awareness , recoveries including overhead, tactical, formation .. about anything we can realistically do. Then we beat eachother up in a debrief that can last as long as the flight itself ! LOMAC does seem to be the current sim most capable of this at this point in time but it serves it's purpose well. BVR in Lomac isn't too good for training we've found though (my opinion only). We attempt to fly atleast once per week and have a nice preflight brief before we go up. It's pretty darn realistic .. and repetitive as I suspect the real thing is. Anyone who wishes to prepare for FO training (if you are as hardcore as I described above) is welcome to join us. PM me for more info if interested.

I agree rlogue. Training is definitely a good foundation for a high fidelity sim. Though there are a great majority of potential hard core simmers that don't find the genre accessible in the realism modes of games like LO. Being able to jump in quickly and free fly on easy mode is good so potential simmers get a look and feel of the sim. Then having a strong training program like FO is planning will make the transition easier and more likely.

Sometimes I am torn between trying to ignore FO development in the hope that time will go faster and then the sim will be released, and other times craving to hear what new stuff they have planned. :red:

Anyway, just have to keep milking F4 and LO for the time being.

So does anybody else do this kind of flying / training ?

Yes, we do.
Trying to sqeeze the max out of LOMAC, even if itīs not really neccessary for the game itself, e.g. starting engines one by one etc.
As long as the game doesnīt spoil something (like TACAN/INS navigation) we simulate it.

Training in the Airwolves starts off with basic A/A, NAV and A/G and gradually progresses to Ramp starts and more advanced features of AF such as FAC, CAS, LGBs etc. We also have war missions which can test a flight leads abilitys against our top pilots in various scenarios. To top it off theres also War college and advanced War college(these courses are for all services AW,SWSF,SWMC, STAT and Seawolves Virtual Navy).

We use a normal combat spread but in situations like yesterday flight lead did CCRP onto a Search radar and I followed in trail formation to use CCIP and visually hit what he missed.

Kind of surprised that this thread didn't draw more attention as the first release of fighter ops and that other UPT sim coming out will be based on these very things. I do remember once upon a time running across an artical on SIMHQ explaining how to fly tactical formation / turns, I would link it, but i'm just too lazy to search for it.

Those guys running virtual wings/squadrons ought to start flying tactical formations online ... so that when they switch over to fighter ops, they'll have a head start and really pump out some impressive looking flights and skilled pilots.

A wise ex-fighter pilot once told me that the main goals of the flight were to kill the bandits and look good doing it. The first phase of fighter ops appears to tackle the "look good doing it" part of things !

Well .. we've doing doing the two ship training for quite some time now and we're looking to add some more people to it. Anyone interested in some intensive four-ship training please message me. We train in close and tactical formations, ACM, BFM, BVR, etc. (LOMAC)
