View Full Version : Serious question about formation flying!

I have seen many virtual display team vids and have a few question about it.

- When seeing some planes flying in formation you see little bumping going on from the plane like in a real formation.

- I also noticed in a virtual formation display vids a certain plane speeding up to get to the next plane and suddenly its level in speed with that plane and he was comming from far away with a high speed and without seeing him using the airbrake.

When i try to do this and try to level with a plane i only get a straight flight from the plane and not a bumpy ride as i saw in the vid.

And i cant certainly not slow speed so suddenly like that, i have to use the airbrake to far from the plane i want to reach and use the throttle up and down to glide towards it slowly.

How is that possible?

I know you can level your speed at a certain speed with a key and lock it.
But in the virtual display vid the plane was in a loop and the plane that was speeding up and came from far was also turning into that same loop and when it was level in hight with the plane that was already in the loop suddenly has the same speed.
It was a smooth virtual manouvre and very lifelike to watch.

Judging closure and matching speeds can be tricky at first, unlike a car you don't have the same amount of friction to slow you down, so when you "take your foot off the gass" so to speak, you don't slow down very fast.

It all comes down to practice, anticipating where you need to decrease your throttle, monitoring the distance between you and the other jet, relative airspeeds and slowly decreasing your closure speed as the distance decreases.

Thanks for the reply "Buckshot"

This is the vid
Swifts (http://media.putfile.com/swifts)

You see the guy allready in the loop afther the start was followed by his wingman he had to speed up to reach him and from that speed to level in speed is amazing in that vid.

When i tryed, i have to slow down far from the plane i want to reach and use the airbrake and hardworking on the throttle to slide next to it smoothly.
I just have the 2.4 cordless freedom stick from logitech and i just ordered the Saitek X52 with the much bigger throttle!

So my guesses are, that i can control the plane much better with that Saitek X52?

Bigger throttle makes a world of difference for formation flying as does a trakir which most guys use.
