Well, it does not allways have to be expensive to find a solution. This is clear thinking... I am amazed.

Its so simple when you think about it, I'm surprised no one has tried it before but as you see the output for his hud is in black and white and he uses glass to reflect the image.

I just did it! no magnifying glass but just mirror and glass and a hud i drew in paint...It worked but ws very dull (i made a green hud on black background) i have very thin glass like mabee 1.5mm think, could this be the reason it faint or could it be the lack of as lens to focus it? I'm gonna buy a magnifying glass today and see if it makes a diff...

Check the link at the top of this thread, he mentions what glass he used. Remember you can change the focus by moving the monitor up or down.

ha!..the link wasnt working this morning nor was going to frugals world (the forums wouldnt come up..)

now i can check it !

so the focus is adjusted with the distacnce from the monitor?

should the mirror be the same size as the hud image on the monitor?

should the mirror be the same size as the image you want on the hud?

should the monitors hud image be the same size as you want the actual hud image?

what angle should the mirror be at in relation to the hud...i dont know what angle the ave hud leans forward but you get my point from the following pic...is it 45' and the lens correct it to the hud buy rotating it to lie parallel to the hud glass?

sorry about the image i must have not saved it in the right format so its to small to read the image writing when i expanded it!

most important are the labes HORIZONTAL on the horizontal lines and VERTCAL on the vertical line...also i presume the lens is horizontal alos?

You're probably better off setting up your hud facing upwards, that way the light is only being reflected once. The angle is 45 degrees but I think you might have to check to see if two sheets on glass are used or just one.(I think he used one)

so you rekon you have the monitor underneath the lens? but then wht u need the mirror for?..im just a little confused. also that kind of rules out the pit use...i wanted to have mine so that the hud glass and lens sre in the proper place in the pit and have the mirror underneath that like in the bottom of the UFC, then have the monitor out in front of that under the instrument cpanel cover...also i got an old (15 inch by the looks of it) monitor that would suit the big F-15 E hud for FLIR !

i do think this is how its done and for some reason i cant understand what everyone else tells me how to do it?

I don't think you could mount your monitor directly under the hud, for the same reason they don't in the real pit, there wouldn't be enough room to do that and also mount all your instruments etc. Unless you had a very small monitor.

yeah thats where my logic of having the monitor projcet the image horizontal then have a mirror at say 45' the lens above that at horizontal and then the hud...the problem arises here but...and this is what i must not be able to elxplain very well.

if the mirror is at 45' it reflects the image vertically (exactly 90' from horizontal - the monitor), we got that? right... now if the image is reflected verticall wouldnt it be bettir if the HUD glass is angled 45' farward so the image isnt disturbed or stretched or squashed? get me? so now if i want the image to be good with the proper HUD glass angle, which i presume is more than 45' (ie its closer to vertical which is 90' so the Glass might be at 75' or something i dont know what angle the ave hud is) then does the mirror need to be parrallel to the glass so it reflects the image onto it at 90' from the glass surface?

hope this makes my question a little clearer...if not well im just gonna have to trial and error it till i figure it out i spose!

You can mount it the other way and use a mirror or prism to reflect the image onto your HUD. If you mounted the monitor under the HUD then it would be less complex to setup and esier to adjust. Maybe a mini LCD monitor could be used.

yeah i spose but there just isnt any room in the UFC for that sort of thing after you put all the switches etc that already have to be in there.

Hey SUBS17: I was just doing some touch and go's on the USS roosevelt (spelling?) in AF with the falcon! Im pumped for naval ops now - SOOOOOOOOOOO KEEN!!!!!!!!!!! Makes me wann build an F/A-18 pit over an F-15E pit now! if they make this F/A-18 HOTAS...by the way how were you gonna make 18 throttle handles? would you be able to make em and put em on the SFS base?

Oh and sorry for the of the topic talk! Ive just exited AF after my little naval training!

LOL, I'm surprised you didn't lower your hook. Yeah I'm waiting patiently for a new Hornet sim since Janes F/A-18. As for the Hotas, I was going to either create one from scratch or get a mold off a real one and use that. If CH does just a desktop one then I'll remove the stick from the base and attach it to a similar setup to yours. I'd use the existing pots and rewire them to the circuit board and have the base just to hold the circuit board.

yeah after i posted i went back in and landed to a stop...the first time i when i was doing touch and goes, i tried to put my hook down, which i presumed was that switch above the gear handle, but it didnt lower the hook in the external veiw so i just tried a few touch and go's then i realised that there musnt be an animation for the hook and looked on the warning panel and there it was. I was actually pretty surprised that the hook worked on the carrier!

well im hip deap in school work and sleep at the moment so as soon as thats finished im gonna begin work on my stick...yeah the thing is that if CH do bring out a HOTAS (even if its only the throttle) thats gonna most likely dictate which i build...F-18 or F-15E. im slowly leaning towards F/A-18 now but...not to sure why the info is harder to find!

where were you gonna get the real one to take a mold of?

I'd probably ask around, I already have found 3d diagrams of the hotas so its possible to create one from scratch but I'll wait and see what ch does. It'll be a while yet before I see a hornet addon for FO or any other company so I have time.
