Thought I might chuck this vid of an A4 doing a little flyby at Waiouru on the central plateau by Mt Ruapehu, in the Nth Isl of NZ.
It is by the army base and is where we did some of our live firing, and it's cold!

Quick clip but you get the idea as to what goes on :wink2:

UPDATE : I have posted some more A4 vids below - check em out :thumb:

Heh  . Well, I don't think, I was never there .

I was always around Ardmore air field/Papakura in South Auckland.

We weren't grounded for the weather more than once or twice in the 5-6 months I was there

Waiouru is well known for its bad weather and wild horses

And bloody freezing temperatures! :nono: My mates in the Army will happily tell you about nights lying in ditches covered in snow, apparently coiled springs ready to leap into combat action.
"Cuz can yu feel your feet" - "Bro I couldn't feel me feet if you broke them off and bashed me in the head with them!"

Actually Subs there was talk before I left the local council wanted to cull all the wild horses - everyone kicked up a massive stink...rightly so!

Yea the weather at Ardmore isn't so bad - standard Auckland weather. If its pissing with rain now you better grab your sunnies - cause it's gonna be sunny and 20 degs in the next 5 minutes....followed closely by thunderstorms.

Was where I lived for the last 3 years before comming over to Oz, (down in Ramarama), worked out at Ardmore and at Mangere at AirNZ - go south AKL!

I have to say that 3rd movie is the best I've seen yet of the RNZAF Skyhawks, certainly brings back memories seeing them fly like that. Now days they have to do their low level passes in a 757 which does look impressive but just not the same.

They didn't want to cull all of them, just some of them. There are too many of them, remember the TV report a few years back of the Army shooting half a dozen. What happened there was the young males got kicked out of a herd so came over to the local pony club looking for action. One of them actually attacked a pony while a young girl was on it(breaking her leg). So of course they had to get taken out but the media didn't bother to mention that in their report. Those horses are amazing though, if an artillery shell or motar bomb goes off nearby, they just casually walk away.

Lol - yea I don't think the 75 really has quite the same effect - but kinda cool none the less.

Quite like the third vid too - miss the days of watching them tear around and the low passes down the flightline.
If anyone has seen any pictures of Ohakea airbase in NZ and seen the wire with flags between the hangers and the control tower - that was put there to stop the A4's and macchis flying between them :thumb:

Does anyone know the maximum takeoff weight for A-4 to be able to launch from ex-RN light fleet carriers?

Thanks in advance.

Cougar12dk
02-27-2007, 02:48
On Wikipedia I found that the max takeoff weight is: 24,500 lb (11,136 kg). I recon that'll be somewhat the same from carriers.

I'd think that ex-RN CVL (which, unlike US fleet carriers, are neither fast nor big enough to handle supersonic aircraft) probably couldn't do as good as bigger carriers......

What is CVL short for? Carrier Aircraft Launch?

I know CVN is Nuclear (N) Aircraft (V) Carrier (C)

A CVL is a light aircraft carrier. It is a bit bigger than a CVE (Escort Carrier) yet smaller than a CV. In the late 50's and early 60's there were also CVA's (Attack Carriers) and CVS's (Anti-Submarine Carriers). The Kitty Hawk and Constellation were originally built as CVA's as can be seen on some of the plaques scattered around the ship (most notably on the island).
