Those that haven't seen this, check it out - using a real GPS with F4, LOMAC and FS2004:

...Prefferably in NMEA format sent to the serial port
Thats easy in lockon since your grid coordinates automatically appear in the external view.
That is an easy thing to code as it is just sending the data to the serial cable. The only thing that I would question is the availability of such systems in real aircraft. If that is the case than adding this functionality will be very possible.

I don't thing that any real aircraft output the GPS data anywhere but this is not what we want to see modeled.
If you take a handheld GPS in a real cockpit it will just work.
If you take it in a simpit it will either show nothing (bad reception) or your homes coordinates the whole time.
If it has NMEA input and you connect to the serial port you can have it showing your in-game coordinates.
In F4, FS2004 and X-plane you can export the coordinates but you need to write your own program to read them and convert them to NMEA sentences. So if FO could directly send NMEA sentences to the serial port, that would be great.
It would be more realistic to have a moving map display possibly featuring grid coordinates rather than just the numbers.

You can configure any GPS receiver to MGRS (Military Grid). During my service that's how I had mine configured. Now I use EGSA87 (grid in meters, specificaly made for Greece).
