View Full Version : A-10 Pilots
Any A-10 pilots ever come in here ???
Yes, I'll probably be flying the A-10 also, it all depends on how the terrain looks. But I'm still a bit undecided between the A-10 and the F-16, I have to test them both in the game and see which fits my flying style. My prediction is that it will be the A-10. :thumb:
Also, I noticed that you have a Geforce 6800 Ultra, I was thinking on getting the 6800 GT Overclocked from BFG. What is the diffrence between the two, is the Ultra much better?
Lmao i meant real A-10 pilots
Theres one in the lockon forums, I forgot his name but he answered a thread on the A-10 a while back.

Save the cash and get a 6800GT........and overclocked GT is basically an Ultra. Alternatively......the next Gen, 7800GTX, arriving soon......6 days to be exact.........so I suggest you wait and grab one, overclock it, so it can last you for a MUCH longer time as well as handle Fighter OPS

Yeah, I'm an A-10 pilot finishing up RTU right now. Will be headin to Pope for the 74th FS in about a month and a half. I am very lucky to be flyin this jet, gettin to shoot the gun almost every sortie with at least 9BDU's and rockets about every third sortie or so, we'll be dropping live Mk82's next week...sweet. I think we get to drop a shit ton more than the other RTU studs do... though I could be wrong as I'm sure somebody will point out as in all forums. Got any questions send 'em this way.
Yeah whats your configurations, on lockon I often carry 4 IIR Mavs(on twin launchers), 2 Aim9s, ECM pod and the rest CBU97s. Just wanted to confirm a realistic load out with killing tanks in mind. BTW you ever totally killed a tank with the gun, we had a bit of a discussion on the lockon forums. This russian tank driver claimed the rounds wouldn't penetrate a T72.
cheers

I'm a great fan of warthog (as you can see in my signature) and I would like to talk with you about A-10 fight tactics, for all A-10 fans and for use in Lock On 1.1.
Cool arguments could be:
-CAS - FAC missions
-SEAD strike "warthweasels"!
-ground attack tactics and splits over the target area
Any idea is welcome!
Nice to meet you! :thumb:

Hawg configuratins to kill tanks: The Maverick is the best penetrating weapon (it can slice through 24" of armor) we carry for tanks, dependent upon the model and launcher we will carry 2 or 6, but mainly 2, (usaully an IR and a CCD, H or K model).
We do not talk much about CBU-97, "1000 tiny miracles in a can" but rather more about employing CBU-87, however both should be effective against armor. If you have an area target like a convoy probably a better idea where you migh get a couple with one CBU. The Mk82 can kill a tank with a shack or damn near, most of the time we will rip 3 when trying to kill a tank with Mk82's, Mk84's will ruin his day with a near hit.
The gun can and will kill a T-72, that is what it was designed for. Even our TP rounds (our practice rounds which is just a metal slug) will penetrate up to four inches of armor. So our API rounds will cut right through a tank with the caviat you are at the right slant range and dive angle. If you are looking to be realistic you would want to kill a tank with the gun from a high dive angle (30deg or above) with a slant range of 1.5nm or less. The higher your dive angle the greater the slant range can be while you still get the kill.
I know this is a rather long answer but man you can just talk forever about how you can kill shit better... short answer is your loadout would realistically work for tank killing, though you will see and hear of different loadouts for our real world ops b/c we are hitting so many things other than tanks now...

Sure, I'll do my best to answer questions... I am still learning quite a bit at this stage since I am striving to just be a wingman right now. I do not want to act as if I am an expert, but I will help everyone with what I know. I am right now getting into tactical employment of the Hawg, threat reactions, working with a GFAC/AFAC, its good stuff. I know it would kick ass if you could interact with a FAC in a Sim, passing TGT coordinates, marking targets, or getting into night tactics which is huge now with all of our night atack capabilities. Let me know what's happenin...

Thanks for your reply is there much of a difference between the cbu97 and 87 in the area of effect? And also the dimensions and weight. BTW could an A-10s gun do much against an M1?

I just made an FAC training mission for flaming cliffs since it models WP rockets on the A-10. You can mark targets online which is cool, I'm hoping to test it with members of 35th sometime this week. The other sim Falcon Allied Forces I've done a successful FAC mission in the F16 using an OV10 as FAC. They don't use smoke to mark targets but rather bearing/distance and padlock view automatically looks at the target.(padlock=view out the window tracking an object). The FAC was an ai pilot, still I wish they could drop smoke in F4.

The cbu97 and 87 both weigh about 1000lbs realistically and damn near identical at about 8' long and a 16" diameter. The real reason that drives us to use one or the other is cost and inventory and/or is what we are going after worth dropping a quarter million or a few thousand.
The 97 is going to have a greater area of effect about 1.5x the coverage of the 87 dependent upon your spin rate, fuzing, and what altitude you want the bomblets to be released at.
As for the gun vs M-1, I do not know enough about our tanks to say whether we could kill it or not with the gun. I would say we could b/c most tanks are weak around the top of the aft end. Most were designed to take on other tanks with direct hits from about the same altitude. When we attack with the gun from a higher angle we hit the tank's skin at an almost perpendicular angle, so our bullets will have less armor to dirve through than if we attacked at a lower angle. I have been taught that if we attack shallow our bullets might even just glance off the face of the tank's armor.
Like I was talking about earlier with the "TP" rounds penetrating 4" of armor, one of our instructors had a buddy who accidently opened up on a friendly tank during an exercise who happened to wander into the TGT zone overnight. It was unoccupied at the time but suffered a mobility kill b/c we sent several rounds through the engine bloc just with our practice rounds. I could not say whether that was an Abrams or not.
Definitely check out this website for weapon specifics, it has some good unclass stuff:
