If you go to UPT through an ANG Fighter Squadron, do you follow the same guidelines as an Active Pilot when transitioning from the T-37 to the T-38's? I know that active duty pilots must request what trainer to move on to next (T-38, T-1, ct) and only the top students that chose T-38 get the T-38 slots. My question is that if you come from a Guard unit that has fighters, do you just have to get fighter qualified to move on to the T-38's, or do you still have to compete with the active duty pilot in order to get a T-38 slot?
I wasn't sure if it was any different for Guard pilots or not, just trying to clear some things up. Thanks,

Haole

Ahh, I know how frustrating that is. Just respond when ever you have a chance. I'll also be working thursday night for the night flying so if you happen to be around you can just stop by the shop. Thanks for replying.

Hey RCGSupra,

First off, nice car. I'm a big fan of the import scene.

Not sure if Haole already answered your question but I can give you my two cents. As you probably already know, when you go the ANG route you basically apply for the slot through the unit itself and have to be choosen. Since you apply for a specific units (F-16, A-10, etc.), you will know what airframe you'll be flying. They send you to UPT and you're required to stay in the top 50% of your class. Depending on which airframe you're flying, you will take that track (like F-16, T-37 or T-6 onto the T-38). I've always thought this was a huge plus with going the ANG route, since you know exactly what plane you'll be flying upon graduation (assuming you stay in the top 50% of course). I'm sure Capt Haole can go into much greater detail when he has time, but I figured I'd give you some of the information I've gathered from my research and conversations with many many pilots. As for me, I'm an AFROTC cadet at the University of Washington (Det910)... so I'll most likely be going the AD route. However, the AF is going "restructuring" its force because they have too many damn officers from what I've been told. =) This is the first year field training slots won't be a 100% selection rate. They're offering us to go the ANG or reserve route as well. Anyways, take care and good luck with whatever you do.

Look me up at drill and we'll discuss this in greater detail. But in short for everyone else...you have to still finish in a position to be fighter qualified. In other words you cant finish at the bottom of your class and expect to still go to F-16s. If you are having trouble your flight commander will call your Guard base and discuss the situation with your leadership back home. They may decide to send you the heavy route and transfer you to another Guard unit, or they may decide flying is not for you and send you home.
At the same time...your guard F-16 slot does not take an F-16 slot away from an AD guy. They are from totally seperate "pots".
I hope that answered your question, but as I said just look me up this weekend and we can chat.
See ya!

Hey will what's up?

Haole,
Thanks for the response. I know I wouldn't have a problem, I was just curious if things worked different for the guard. See you this weekend!
