The flight from our base to the southern border of Iraq was no short trip, so you had plenty of time to think about what you needed to do for the night's mission. The first thing you do after the long "haul" up there is hit the tanker to get topped off with some good ole JP-8. Finding a tanker in the middle of many other tankers (and they all have their lights off) is a mission in itself. Us fighter guys thought it was funny that you would pull up to a tanker that had every single light while the "chicks in tow" were all lit up. As soon as we would hit the tanker track we went full up on the lights so that we wouldnt hit each other getting to and from the tanker. Those tanker guys sure are tactical with the lights out thing:)
Anyway....get topped off and then head north towards Big Baghdad which is by the way a very large city! We check in with AWACS to see where we are needed if we were not already tasked. In route to our tasking area it is amazing to look around and see the fire fights on the ground, AAA going up, SAMs firing here and there, bombs exploding on the ground and all the other sights out there. The NVGs allow you to see a lot more than you would probably care to see! My first night mission after the war started was really interesting. I would see tracers from the AAA then I would see (what I THOUGHT was a SAM) launching. In reality it was huge AAA rounds from the big guns. When I actually saw the first SAM launch with the NVGs it looked like a shuttle launch! A night SA-2 launch is pretty cool to watch when it isnt aimed at you!
Some other cool sights at night was watching an ammo dump get hit by a 2000 pounder and watching the missiles that were stored inside cork srew around and fly out of the area. Watching the B-52s and B-1s on bombing runs were pretty darn cool, also. From a distance it looked like a late evening thunderstorm on a summer night with the sky lighting up every few seconds with bright orange flashes.
More to come........
