Hi People,

I'm interested in the origins of how you got your callsign, and the story behind it.

Was it given to you by your squadron mates, or is it something you made up? Nothing's too embarrasing! :wink2:

I made mine up, as I tended to have a lot of trouble landing in my early Falcon 4 career- kept leaving divots on and before the runway :red: but I'm waiting for my virtual squadron (62nd Fighting Falcons, Brisbane, Australia) to allocate me one!

Hey Divot.

Well, my usuall callsign is Nemesis but when I joined this forum it was already taken so I chose Tanzanite as a callsign because I work at the only place in the world where the gemstone occures in nature and is mined

Mine is a character from a book (sort of). Also, when I get on Mr. Bandits tailpipe I will soon extinguish the glow of his engine. Well, in theory at least.

And it's Sun, not Son! I don't abduct little boys! :finger: :jester:

Seafury
10-05-2004, 16:49
Mine was an old aircraft that I had a remote contolled model of. I'll post a picture of the actual aircraft called "Seafury" at some point when I have the picture uploaded.

Hey bud. The Time came to select a callsign a couple of years ago. it just happened that night i was attacked and by a black wipsnake on my front driveway. These little barstards are quite quick, small and very dangerous. so i though well why not, i have lived to tell the tail of my Wipsnake encounter will you :wink2:

I use this current name online a lot. It's a creature/demon/monsterthing from H.P. Lovecraft's horror stories. However, it's not quite adequate for simming. Since I juggle, I was thinking of "Juggler"... otherwise I'm nameless....

Mine is in memory of my late father, who's callsign in the USAF Green Hornets was 'Spyder'.

LaWMaN
10-06-2004, 01:48
My call sign go's back to the first network game we ever played "DOOM" it cost me $600 ozy for 2 intel cards 5m of cable 2 terminators and 2 days to work out how to get it all to work. The name LaWMaN is a brand of ammo back in them days and the game OUTLAWS came out a year or 2 later. One of the voice message was "HEY MR LAWMAN" so I was stuck from that day on. They were the days........................

My callsign is a part of the title of the first techno thriller written by Tom Clancy: Red storm rising.

question to real fighter pilots on FO forums:

is there any rule of choosing a callsign? Or you can choose whatever callsign you want?

Buckshot
02-12-2007, 00:11
You never get to choose a callsign. You "earn" it, usually by doing something stoopid and then get it assigned to you by your squad mates.

Like now, we would call you something like, "guy who digs up threads that are almost two years old", or something like that, and in a much more concise form. :whistling

Yep something which has to do with archelogy -> digging up -> KingTut for example

razorseal
02-12-2007, 00:57
mine is part air force, part navy lol

When I was little I would watch all these airforce movies and one of the guy's callsign/nick was 'razor' he was my fav dude... and then later I always wanted to become a navy seal, so I got the seal from there and back in 96 when I was creating my aol screenname I looked for razor which was taken, so I combined my 2 fav things, razor from the movie and seal from what I always wanted to do back then and got razorseal :)

Lonewolf024
02-12-2007, 01:16
Mine was given to me back when I was a long haul trucker and I refused to run team, strickly solo and I've always had a thing for wolves. So my fellow drivers started calling me Lonewolf and of course that name is always taken so I added "420" backwards ...

Zaggy
02-12-2007, 01:47
Mine is about 14 years old, and was given to me by then band mates... Originally just Zagreb (from a certain piece of spoken word stuff by Henry Rollins), it then became abbreviated to Zaggy about 10 years ago (i became known for zigging, when i should have zagged - ie, always finding myself in trouble)... And since then, i've been Zaggy... Or Zaggs...

mine goes back a while too. i started to be called flip because people were too tired of calling me "phil" and everyone thinks im a bit crazy so...yeah thats how i got mine.

Flip

Chuter
02-12-2007, 10:49
I picked my callsign because since I'm pretty new to the game, it always seems as though I'm pulling the ejection lever (hence "chute" as in parachute) more than I'm pulling my trigger  (its still pronounced shooter).

SpinKick
02-12-2007, 11:59
My original callsign was "Hung Solo". Almost everyone that knew it thought it was a perversion of the Han Solo character. Although I thought it was funny, it came about because I worked at a Chinese-owned company. During a Star Wars conversation, one of the colleagues pronounced it "hung" instead of "han". I thought it was humorous, so it stuck for many years. Until... a year or two ago I did yet another "ramp start" guide. C3PO from LP liked it and posted it on their website. However, he felt the "Hung Solo" callsign would be to offensive to post, so it's my name instead of my callsign. It's even on Frugals that way (probably because of LP's listing).

So, not to totally offend anyone I changed my callsign to SpinKick. It's a martial arts thing, but I was totally blank otherwise. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Mine was given to me because I always used to fly the SU-27. The 13 (one three) was because my old squad required that we pick two didgets after our callsigns.

Mobius
02-13-2007, 00:29
Well, mine is from an extraordinary modern combat flight simulation called..."Ace Combat 4"...., where Mobius 1 was your callsign throughout the game :red:. Yeah, not realistic at all, but it was quite fun. That was probably my favorite video game back during my high school days, until SOCOM 2 came along, when I got totally addicted to SOCOM's online play, and I had to think up a clever nickname, so I used "Mobius1_MWI", and it has stuck since, minus the "1_MWI" portion. But I'm really getting sick of it...

Substitute a "Y" for an "I" and there you have it.

When I first picked it up my buddy was refering to me as one because of my pale pasty complexion from working the night shift and almost never seeing the sun for three and a half years straight.

I thought up my name, strangely enough, just out of the need to find a name which wasn't yet taken! I wanted a username which I could use for many years in many places, without getting that horrible "Username already exists" error. I lived near a mountain, so "rockface", and I just thought of something rather contradictory and non-sensical (so that nobody else would have thought of it) so I came up with Liquid Rockface, the ultimate contradiction! :thumb:

zkdablin
02-13-2007, 06:25
Mine comes from a book I started writing some years back, and are still yet to finish :hhmmm ; out of all the characters I created within that story I believe I hold more attribution to Dablin then the rest.

Once I started using it, it became my entire virtual personality for online simulations and I've used it everywhere I go. The ZK at the beginning is the standard country designator for all aircraft registered in New Zealand.

And here was me thinking it was from that awesome quote, you very rarely hear during campaign in F4... 'I am become death; the Shatterer of Worlds!'

And your initals now spell PEW!

Very disappointed Paul...

Jackal
02-13-2007, 08:42
Some ( ) years ago I've read a Forsyth's bestseller, "The Day of the Jackal", it was about the not so ficticious story of the failed gun attack to the former French President Charles De Gaulle ordered by the extremist right organisation called "O.A.S.", which at this purpose engaged a top skilled killer.
He had no known name, and for this occasion he choosed for himself the name "Jackal" (Chacal, in French), maybe because he would fake his seekers with a name caught from one of his several false indentities (Cha.rles Cal.trop).
I've choosen it five years ago because some of my sim flight mates of that time have thought it was my own attitude doing my tasks quietly, precisely and with a killer attitude - one shot had to be enough, I mean. :wink2:
Since then, I specialised as a Weasel pilot because I liked blasting things too much - I was of this kind since I was a kid, to tell the whole truth. :rofl

Jackal out.

Actually, you can hear the Shatterer of Worlds quote a lot if you go into the DOGFIGHT mode and fly that way (that was how I flew F4 most of the time). I was called SOW so many times I actually started to believe it after a while. I didn't have too many chances to fly campaign. I felt I was too busy developing to do any campaigning.

water has the consistency of concrete if you hit it with enough speed...rock...front of a wave is usually called the face...which surfers surf down...liquid rock face.

my name is just a palindrome I found...reads the same backwards as it does forwards...which is why I didn't put a space between the words...as a result it looks like darwin award if you glance at it quickly instead of drawn inward

Ah ah sorry I was thinking of surfing the internet....what are these times coming to! Wow your username is ingenious drawninward!!! Did you think that up or did you read it somewhere?

Another palindrome I know is racecar...

I can't help it... I have to tell this short war story. Richard_H, you reminded me of something that happened on patrol many years ago.

I got a call for a peeping tom. I caught the guy. His state-issued identification card read "Richard Dick". Now just imagine the harrassment he went through... All I can say is I cracked me up pretty bad that night.

My callsign is "Castle", and it was given to me after joining the US Virtual Navy. I got a letter from Air Combat Command saying "You're to join TeamSpeak with the callsign '636_Castle'", so I stuck with it. I'm still waiting for an assigned callsign however based on something personal...

I'm pretty sure they're assigned to you based on personal matters.

yes they are...

on f16.net there was a story about a guy who insisted on being called "Iceman" for obvious reasons, but they didn't think he was "cool" enough so they called him "Slush" instead!:lol :rofl

Hello all, this is my first post here at Fighter Ops, but I've been following the progress for quite a while. Needless to say, I'm very impressed.

I got my call sign from my instrument ground instructor who had a little trouble with my last name, Iazzi. (My great-grandfather was Italian).
