A really good site to check out would be
http://www.viperpit.org
They have a tone of pits and how to knowledge there.
Sadly I dont have enough room for a pit but I am working on my own creative desk to use for mutliple sims. It is taking a desk from IKEA and adding things on to it to make it into my own version of thegamedeck.com style desks.
I have a huge flat area for the desk top. Enough room for a couple of monitors. When I get my new rig I will have Falcon on one and F4 glass on the other. I found some mouse shelfs that support enough weight for my cougar to rest on and the spin out to let me into the desk easier (small bedroom). I just need to get a new chair for it that doesnt have arms and some 7.1 surround sound speakers.

Fair Warning....Pit Building is addictive.
I'm a PBJ (pit building junkie) and my name is Venom.
I started out by just wanting to mount my sidewinder off to the side.
Then I needed a X-36, then a masterpilot, then a second, then, then, then.
Here I am today...still wanting more, NEEDING MORE.

just helps to have the controls in sort of the right area.... about $50 of MDF from Bunnings,$20 in spray paint, $40 VB from the bottle shop and an afternoon in the garage.. :wink2:

Nice DD and once you learn your cougar profile you can add a landing gear panel. :)
That's how it starts.
Ok off to the hardware store this weekend thats me hooked........

Great work guys, I love it, this is where it's at, love seeing other simmers who are as crazy as I am, lol. Still a long way from a functional pit, but I'll get there one day, here's my modest little pit. I only really use it for LAN meets and airshow demos, it's so easy to pull apart and transport, everything just slots in and out. Can't fly without that programmable keyboard though, increases the immersion factor through the roof, you'll notice there are both mfd's fully laid out, ICP, and everything else I need, no hunting for key combinations. Will certainly do me until I can afford to get some real switches and buttons, can only imagine how much it adds to the realism with these pits you guys are building. It actually looks a little better now, seat foam has been properly covered, and painting wasn't complete in that shot. Will do some more piccy's at an airshow we will be flying at in a couple of weeks.

I could never ever have my own home built pit. I feel uneasy having my joystick and games laying out in the open. got to keep looking good for the ladies.

Skarp,
You know honestly I use to feel the same way.. But you know what... Some of my girlfriends found it wierd when I had my HOTAS setup and talking on a headset flying Falcon. As a matter of fact they found it geekish.. But since i started building cockpits, as this is my thrid version, they love it, and find it talented.. So funny sometimes how they see things. Cause I would tend to find things the otherway around.

Hey Lawman,
the programmable keyboard can be purchased from somewhere like AAA POS in joondalup or anywhere where point of sale systems are sold....
Hey Buckshot,
How hard is it to program the sucker using XP?
I have done it for people using programs like Quickpos but never on a XP system.... Great Idea I never thought of it ..to use one in Falcon..damn nother expense coming my way..lol :thumb:

Hey guys, yeah it's a Tipro keyboard, couldn't be any easier to program, it's just a matter of clicking on the virtual key on the screen and telling it what key combo you want it to do. It can be any number of keypresses, either at the same time, or with pauses etc, you can also have 4 different modes for the keyboard so that the same key does four different things depending on what mode it's in which is indicated by an LED. Certainly glad I got it, but beware it's a slippery slope you start buying this stuff, and you will be wanting to do a full pit in no time, lol.
oh my god.. i'm so envious in you guys...
I only have the X-45....
and a normal keyboard...
I can only wish that some day I will be the owner of a completely working pit.. with working MFD's and ICP and maybe even an independent hud projector on the thick glass before the white screen of the big panoramic projector...
only wishes...

Well I'll take it as a definite yes that FO will have a lot of custom pit functionality. I've been thinking about building one that's "generic" so that I can play just about any game on it, from the old X-wing Alliance on it to FO. Just reprogram the EPIC card, get some card slots so I can change the switch labels easily... and then.... and then.... and then.... and then..... [boolean overload]

Ok here is my desk in progress. I am looking to get some X-keys for a few different games. The Cougar is on 2 mouse shelves that I can take them off and put on my N52 on and use a mouse on the other. Great for FPS shooter games. I also have a keyboard shelf that I can put in the center which I will probably do when I get the X-key panel.

Good to see you look after your hardware.
Oky - so let me be the next one in the row... :wink2:
Here is a pic of my simulator "shell" and ladder upon arrival day. The pit will be equipped with all A-model stuff and the C-model goodies (ICP, MFD...) - that I will need for FighterOps etc. - will go onto the Canopy frame (not shown in this pic - I will use a canopy frame with half a canopy on it). Hope this works from an ergonomic standpoint though, but I'm quite positive about that!
Well, and unfortunately, in order to being able to get this beast into any living environment, I might need to modifiy it a bit, meaning shortening or so.

Just a take a chainsaw and open up the living room a little bit. It is an entertainment center after all. Where did you get that from?

"SHE WILL KILL ME ONE DAY LOL"
@ Uber_Olafsun
Lol - great idea, but I wonder what the person who owns my appartment will think about that! :wink2:
The frame is from an actual A-model trainer, s.th. in the block 1-10 range, about 3.5m long and 450kg in weight! Quite a stress-test for the floor, when you consider that this is just the frame!
@ LaWMaN
Thanks! I'll definetely keep you guys updated. Over there at Viperpits is also a thread for my project within the "Viper Pit Progress Reports" section. You'll find a couple more pics there.
Oh, and thanks for your offer!
For my luck my miss is a supporter of my project and kept me from stopping it already several times. This hobby eats up alot of time and quite some money also, and here and there comes a day where you think it might be best to just stop it, sell the stuff and concentrate on your other hobbies that don't require so much space etc.! Good to have someone who directs you back to the track and adds to your moral! :thumb:
It might be different though, when my beast finally moves into the house... :red:

Apartment Smarpet. Nothing a little drywall and paint can't fix.
Thinking about that now?
How the Heck are you going to carry that in there anyway. Hire the local gym with a powerlifting contest?
@ Uber_Olafsun
I'll write that idea with the competition down - sounds like a great idea! ;)
Indeed there are two such guys (body-builder) who already offered their help!
At the moment I have no plans yet on how to get it into the house one day, but when the time comes, there will for sure process a solution. Maybe by helicopter through the roof? :bounce:

The SSM-2402 ICs are very nice for switching audio. More photos to follow. I figure I can build the electronics whilst I'm still in the UK and build the big stuff when I get home to Brisvegas.

Hey guys heres an idea for you too add that little bit extra for your pit. In some of the military flight sims they feature harness loosening and tension with reference to g's and turning. So as you roll and turn the appropriate belt tightens up or both (+g's). Just an idea.
cheers

Subs Yeah when you go over 8G's the one around your neck cut's off your air supply for redout's and blackout's "LOL could not help myself. I feel like a sick :clown: today, got the flu and don't feel well
Its not really used for g effect, just to give the feelling of turning. Its used on some military flight sims that use moving platforms. The g effect is just a slight tension on the straps. You cannot use that to simulate g but there are ways to simulate it but thats beyond anyones expenses.

Oh it's being done...
http://www.viperpit.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=13
I have also thought of having some sort of pulley attached to the back of the helmet to gradually restrict your head movement with G. Especially if you're using a TrackIR, you wouldn't be able to move your head and look around until you laid off the Gs.
Thats a g-suit, not a bad idea getting the suit to work. It might add to the immersion a bit.

Looking pretty damn good there Marvin! When does the electronics fitout begin? How long have you been working on it now (both elapsed and total hours work)?
Marvin157th
10-27-2004, 15:49
Kodak,
Thanks!! It is also the mother of all heavy weight champion pits! "And now in this corner, the complete MDF heavy weight champion weighing in at 500+ lbs!"
Ruprecht,
Hmmm, thats a hard one?? I started this cockpit last October. I have not worked every single day as I put in a few hours in almost every weekend. I even stopped for about 3-4 months as I was waiting for certain parts before I could continue. Hours?? Who knows, I don't keep track of that stuff.. It is a hobby, so no matter to me, I work on it when time and money permitts. I do know that the skinning was very time consuming as I used heavier wood then most for durability. So every skin panel had to be grooved at the back every .5" then soaked and shaped before mounting. So one panel took almost an hour to hour and half. Just the skinning took me almost 48 complete hours to do. Now I need several hours to fill and sand it all down for a nice finish.
Electronics, well I have most of RS stuff, (jsut ordered the new RWR) and I think that is about it for RS stuff for me. I am using phidjets for my eyebrow, caution panel lights etc. Not sure what I am going to use for the switches at this time.
Marvin
Congratulations, Jody!

Browsing through the viperpit forums is the quickest way I know to mentally commit to a few thousand dollars and a whole heap of weekends building a pit.
Within a few days of my first visit I owned about £100 of assorted electronics with no clear idea of what to do with them but with a clear goal to make a pit worthy of publishing there :thumb:
Can't wait for all the pitbuilders goodies in FO/HO/NO.

Michi,
Ha ha ha, crash test dummy! I like that one! That was actually the first time I sat in the pit since I started the shell, as it was a little too unstable to load my 220lbs body in there! Now, it is strong as on Ox and just as heavy. (speaking of which, how the hell you spell ox anyway?)
Yes, painting is so close I smell it!
Take care

I picked up an old dentists chair yesterday and it will be a brilliant base for a pit!
The Chrome is still good, the head rest is adjustable and the arm rests are of steel tube which have large padded arms which a Cyclic and a Collective can be mounted! The back rest can be leaned back and I can easily attach a footrest to mount some flight pedals. (does anyone have pedals to sell .... havent got them yet! lol)
If all goes well, The missus cant winge too much and if she really hates it....... shell probably use it to rip all my teeth out! :owned:

I'm at 1,500 feet, snow rarely gets below 2,500. Only once in the 5 years I've lived here and didn't stick.

Let me guess, did you get Realsimulator to prep that FLCS? Looks dam good.
SUB17, Not sure what you mean.. This is not made by Realsimulator.. THis is made by Marv De Beque.. He makes them for the military, so this is milspec design. Of course modified to work with the cougar.. :D
Take care

Ruprecht,
Ahhh, yes now I understand.. Yes I am pretty anxious to give this a real try in the sim. I made a solid mount for it, and have to put a 2X4 on my desk to attach it to the right position so I can really give it a go in Falcon.

I thought you might have got the FLCS modified by realsimulator, as they do a similar thing as to what you've got there with mil spec tension on the stick. But if thats a custom job then its very cool, wouldn't mind knowing how to do that myself.
cheers

Subs17,
Not knocking RS mod at all.. But it only looks to me like they made their FSSBs small enough to fit in a cylindrical base. They seemed to have trade off a lot of the SSC detail compared to the one I had made.
With regards to building your own SSC goto www.viperpit.org there is a whole section on building an SSC.
