View Full Version : Key Mapping / Reservations

Seeing as how FO is at a very young stage, I think I should bring up the topic of key reservations. I brought it up to UBI during the Lock On development and was ignored. However, this is an important topic and needs to be addressed.

I, and I am sure many will agree with this, would like to see a bank of keys not assigned to any in game function. I think F9, F10, F11, and F12 will be PERFECT for this.

The reason is because almost everyone uses external communications programs and TrackIR type devices. These devices require hot keys. If those keys were left open, then users could assign anything they wanted to them. For example....

F9 - TrackIR Enable / Disable
F10 - TrackIR Center
F11 - TeamSpeak Push To Talk Button
F12 - TeamSpeak Whisper Channel PTT

This would make many people VERY happy because, as it stands now, we have to hunt through 5 sheets of key presses to try and find a few keys to bind our comm and TrackIR hot keys too.

There are more considerations. Would Ctrl-Alt-F12 etc work just as well?[/quote]

I think with the amount of avionics etc to be modelled it may be difficult. I'm not quite sure how LOMAC handles this, but I would envision a system similar to Falcon where you can re-assign functions to whatever key combination you wanted if you wanted to keep some keys free.

Unfortunantly, using a combination of keys will not work.

Both TeamSpeak and TrackIR require a single key press to activate their hot keys.

I will run it by NaturalPoint to see if they can impliment a "combo press hot key" in the next version of their software and will let you know.

Lock On doesnt handle it. :) User's have to go in and clear out and reassign key presses to free up keys to do this.

Of course, if you dont need the key pad + - * / keys, they also work. I prefer the F9-F12 keys myself. Personaly preference, but I will take what I can get!!

Yeah, with falcon and teamspeak what I use is scroll lock for my UHF comms and a key combination for my VHF (whisper) comms as teamspeak allows you to setup whisper using multiple keys. Both of these are then mapped to my Cougar UHF/VHF switch.

Again the perfect solution here is if we had an integrated voice comms solution, whether it be through an API using teamspeak or something similar, or it be a custom made voice comms, this would allow you to have the keystrokes setup from within the game to whatever combination you wanted.

That sounds great Buckshot. Would be nice if this can be implemented
