View Full Version : Flight Time

I recall a thread somewhere discussing plans for a spherical world model and one about flight times in the cockpit. Here's just an idea and I can see flaws in it, but here goes.

Since were're modelling a spherical world, maybe we could model actual flight times between places in the world. Now I realise that many of us (including me) wouldn't actually be able to potentially spend hours flying our virtual planes, so maybe there could be variable flight time: in the options somewhere, there's a setting for flying anywhere from .5% (for example) to 100% of the flight.

So, a 1hr 40min flight (100 mins) could last anywhere (according to user) from 1/2 min to the full 1hr 40mins. That's a bit of an exaggerated example, but it demonstrates the idea.

As for multiplayer, perhaps this could be set as a server setting.

In my opinion time acceleration is the must!
Can you imagine for example 14 hout flight in B-52 (future addons).
I'm not that kind of maniacs  (2-3 hour is OK)

I agree BUT donīt forget to leave the option for total travel time for the maniacs .... after all its hyper realistic option ! 8)

Hmm... Would anyone here want to spend 23 hours flying from England to Australia?

Exactly Antler!!!
They want hyper realism but hwo can (and want) spend 23 hours in the sim ??? I work, study and I dont have enougth free time to fly this kind of missions. Without time compression I will be unable to fly those missions. There is also save option but in my opinion is much more unrealistic than time compression.

Hmm... Would anyone here want to spend 23 hours flying from England to Australia? Well i can. I only work during the week and that's it. Weekends i do nothing and just fly. I personally love the time compression idea, if i don't feel like flying a full flight i can just compress time. But the question is how much of time compression should be available to use? All of the missions i have flown in Falcon are 30-40 minutes max, with 4x compression this cuts game time by about a quarter, but you still log the same amount of flight hours.

So that is the question i am asking. Time compression is good. But how much should be made available to the person playing the sim? Should the person be able to cut a two hour mission down to 10 minutes? That would not only drastically reduce the immersion factor. But it also takes alot of the "fun" in the sim away.

But i also need to say that, by modelling the entire world they don't neccisarily mean you take off from an AB in the USA and fly to England to go bomb a factory. What i personally think they are trying to achieve with modelling the entire globe. Is to give the pilot the choice to fly and perform duty in a specific region throughout the globe, to give the pilot choice as to where he wants to fly. For instance I'll love to fly in the South African region because it is close to home plate. In other words, where the pilot deploys will be the decision of the campaign system. I'm sure the campaign won't task a pilot with SEAD where he has to take off from Alaska in an F-16 cruise all the way to Iraq, bomb his target and fly back. If there is a conflict in a region. The campaign system would automatically transfer the pilot to an appropriate AB within that region. Thus making real time flight possible as i am sure that no mission except for AWACS and AWACS escort will be longer that two hours.

Just my 2cents though

Good 2 cents Vlerkies I think!
BUT if FO will be kind of demo (future add ons like Navy ops, Strategic ops) and in future you will be able to fly for example B-52 BUFF or B-2 Spirit??? Typical mission endure at least few hours (sometimes 16-18 hours) so time compression is a must. You shoulr remember first Desert Storm or Enduring Freedom when B-52 fly long endurance missions. Of course time compression can be implemented only in Strategic Ops.
Conclusion: Time compression should be implemented! If someone love fly many hours missions- OK, no one can force you to use time compression! :military:
P.S.
I'm not aginst yours opinions, I respect yours pionts of wievs, I want only say that this kinds of issues should be options.
