View Full Version : Weather realism
I was wondering how detailed will be weather conditions simulated in FO?
A majority sims take into account weather but global. That means more or less that you set weather for whole flyable terrain.
In real life in one place waether can be exellent but let say 100 miles farther weather can by unflyable (forecast rain, fog ect.) I hope you know what I mean and I hope that in FO weather settings will be really complex.
Welcome Slasher 16!, the weather, oh boy, this is definatly getting ahead in my wish list series , but here we go. Weather in the world is different in different countries. I have found rain storms in the southern states (U.S.) are much different that the northern states. Trade winds play a significant part of a dynamic weather system. When modeling weather, I would like to see this. Another thread mentioned real time weather links to the game (I think that would be too much work for what we need in a flight sim). When flying in weather (bad or good) the aircraft will behave a little differently. In good weather, the aircraft should operate at peek performance. In high winds, generally, a slight osilation occurs. In down pores (heavy rains) the engine performance is lowered due to a high content of water being sucked/compressed/burned through the engine. Graphically, weather can be awsome!!! During heavy rain, the canopy is dotted with millions of water specks blowing accross the canapy. A lightning storm (especially at night) can strike aircraft and produce a bright flash. At night, the land scape is mostly dark and feature less. When a bolt of lightning strikes, the entire surrounding area is fully lit for just under a second (generally). Just flying in clouds offers visibility/performance issues. Waether is a definate part of realisim and part of this "High Fidelity" flight sim!
I posted this in "General Disussions", I hope a world wide dynamic weather system could be used, but realize that could only be implimented when all of the "Ops" moduals were released. :|

It could be very detailed if they use the same idea as MS 2004, the weather system is linked to internet weather servers which contain information on current weather over the specific area you are flying. So say you are flying over your house and it is raining, the weather inside the sim will be the same raining. And when it all of a sudden stops and clears up the rain in the sim also stops and clears up. Hope this post wasn't confusing

I love the idea about using real weather data. That would be so cool. 8)

I see this as a great idea for online play. As for the single player element, 'real weather updates' may have to be randomly generated, since it can't be assumed that everyone that eventually buys the sim will have an Internet connection at home. :)

it won't be assumed if it is an scalable option, you can either select to have live weather updates during single play or not, from a check box in the options section of the sim

Think of this for a moment pilots, "a nuclear weapon is being moved from a test sight, to a firing range in one hour. But there's a problem, a gail force storm has grounded all the aircraft in the theater, except your sqaudron of F-15'S!" You see, the weather can be part of a problem you have to overcome within the theater. So, a weather/time generator would prove to be exciting within the confinds of a conflict. Real time weather has it's appeal, but coding this would take some time. To me, though, it's all good!

As always...
Good thoughts above :)
In my area, the weather can be very different (clear to stormy) in traveling only a few dozen miles. Certainly, it can be different every 100km or so. And weather fronts move along at 15 to 20 mph, so a "ground target" that is under a clear sky can be under a severe storm 15 minutes later.

Vlerkies, buddy, think for a moment, it's pouring buckets, visibility (to ground) at 50 feet! (though in a night hop) and what do you want for you fast attack aircraft? The F-15 of course! And why you ask. :o Simple; process of elimination. The F-16 has one engine and one pilot (in a down pour, there's a significant chance of flame out, and one pilot to fight the storm and hit the bullseye isn't too reliable), the F-117 (difficult to fly in bad weather, and again, one pilot) a Tornado maby, but I would put my money on the F-15, as the pilot fights the storm, the REO hits the mark!
I'll definatly join you, but who's my wingman? (that beer comercial comes into focus "wing maaaaaaaan")
