View Full Version : How many are building your own pit??
Hi all,
Just curious as to how many people have built/are building a cockpit that you use for your flight simming. With a project like this in the works, I see a huge potential for data exporting and separate displays in a homebuilt pit (if the software will support it).
Come on now.... who's turned the family room into your simming HQ?
:D

My wife saw an article on this....and you can guess the rest. Garage or bust!
*raises hand*
me, me!! :D
You can find some pics at my homepage..
I'm definitely waiting, what FO will bring for us pitbuilders...
Since I'm planning to write my own piece of simsoftware for my project, an SDK would be VERY interesting to me.

Mihi, can we get a link? Would love to check it out.
We are working on a simple design, fully integrated pit for multi-use. Only problem... its expensive!!!
Foxhound - you are not alone from what I have seen of other's project. Me, I am not married (advantage for this type of project) and don't have a garage, so my project is scattered throughout my house at present! :D
Mihi - Very nice pit! You've obviously spent a great deal of time on your project.
Terry - you can click the little WWW button at the bottom of Mihi's post to see his website.
Nice to see I am not the only sim nut buildin a pit here!

I can troubleshoo the most in-depth problem with ease... but a simple button push... sigh. :)
Thanks bud.
I've go a bucket load of switches and stuff and intend to start work on one soon.
Gonna start on the MFD's first as they are the most useful.
Not too sure which though:
F-16 - loads of info and F4 to fly.
But everybody does the F-16...
and I fancy a twin throttle jet so I do the Flankers and Eagles etc.
I'm thinking...
F-15E
I like the mudhen, but the F4 one is a bit of a mess at the moment.
But it's going to be in Fighter Ops...
And there's a lovely F-15E on the F4 horizon to tide me over...
Or maybe an F/A-18.
It's in F4 so I could go for it, and do some carrier ops.
It's bound to get added to Fighter Ops at some stage as well...

If you need any help with the data or design of the F/A-18 pit, let me know. Be glad to give you some advice on it. I spent years working on the A/B/C/D models (mostly the C/D though) and have many hours in the simulator.
Just incase you run into problems. :)

That is an amazing project. Very neat!
Nice job on it. I cannot wait to see more photos of it as the progress continues.
My wife would never stop laughing at me for that, and I already absorb enough ridicule from on her a regular basis....
I had the basic frame for my pit sitting in my living room for a couple of months. Everytime someone came over who had not seen it, they'd say "what the hell is that!". Then after I explained they would comment "oh that's cool".
Of course I could read in between the lines... "oh that's *so sad, you don't have a life and think this is* cool"
Oh well, some people just don't understand.

nope people forget that if your totally hooked on a hobby or interest you can go all the way with it..........those same people probably do the same thing but with their favourite interest but just dont realise it

Hiya Rob,
I found your site a while ago.
Absolutely awesome!!!
Slightly more ambitious than my plans...

Thanks Terry :drink: .
I've decided to go with the F-15E, as its A) my favoutite, and B) I have some nice details on it.
All I need now is the time to build it ...
I am at the planning stage of my F117 NightHawk, I chose this plane as it doesnt have any rounded external panells,

I know how you feel Mower. Same here. I'm still trying to work my way through this. It's tough, but I think I'm getting closer :?
Wouldn't you guys rather buy a Commercial Built Cockpit (CBC), and start flying today rather than spend years and more money building a one of a kind cockpit, that you probably can't resale? I don't plan to build mine, instead I'm creating a database of current CBC manufacturers that cater to our community. When I'm ready, I'll buy from the manufacturer that meets my needs.
Also, I'm following the advances in military flight simulation technology. They've gotten really advanced. Just check out http://www.etctacticalflight.com/. Maybe one day we'll get to this level of fidelity.

Neat idea, but has been done before. And their 'F-18 modular cockpit' has quite a few things wrong with it. I've seen better.
Depends really. Mos tof the people building their own pit do it out of love for the hobby. Besides, as long as you do it right, it would be cheaper to build your own than to buy one and have it all shipped to your location.

The link you provided.
You say you've "seen beter". What I'm asking is what company have you seen do it better other than ETC? Also, who's done this before and are they still around?

Yes some day I am going to build a cockpit. :D Probably F-16. The only thing is, I am waiting for someone to develop the simulation program (thought it was going to be Falcon V, ha ha) which will truly interface with a cockpit. If Microsoft can make their Flight Simulatir so that ALL information can be extracted for instrumentation use then there is no reason why this can't be done for our beloved military sims. Sorry, F4Glass doesn't cut it. So maybe that day will NEVER come for me. It all depends on what happens with future simulation developments.

I'm considering it but must put it on "back burner" for now.

Speaking in regards to the F/A-18 Cockpit in that simulator.... Boeing. They do a much better job. :) I have seen other simulators up on the hydrolic platoforms as well that I believe are better. Cant tell all that much from the pictures on the ETC website so until they send me one, I cannot say for absolute certainty.
The ETC "modular cockpit" that is on their website, following the link you provided, is not the actual F/A-18 cockpit. There are things missing, other things in the wrong place. Been awhile since I went to there or I would mention specifics. To lazy to do it right now.
Why are you so defensive about it? Do you work for ETC?
Well...I'm not building a pit yet....
but I am working hardcore on creating a pit interface and welcome input on what you'd like to see. My motivation was the fact that I found everything out there "too limiting" or too expensive for what you got. Several interfaces were "inputs only", I find EPIC to be no TOO high priced for an end product, but the "entry level" is too much.
I'm far enough along to know the basics will work...and far enough that I've abandoned my first USB interface as too limiting after a few experiments. :D
