The F35 is far superior to any version of the F-16 or F/A-18. The biggest problem legacy fighters will have in the future is survivability from SAMs, and stealthy planes (which are now being developed in Russia and China). S-300 and S-400 SAM systems are very lethal at long range. I wouldn't want to be in an F-16 anywhere near those things.
