they can customize the appearance of their craft.

Even if it's appearence is only local to them.

Yeah, customisable skin art is a big draw.
It's also a big benefit for the developers as well.
Do the skins for two uints of FA-18s on a specific carrier.
Allow skins to modified and within a few days of release you will have skins for just about every FA-18 unit ever, and a few more besides.
Plus skin mods for the carriers they fly from.
