I'm sure everyone has seen this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJkNtgK76AM) before since it's quite old (by internet standards at least).

My reaction to it was that the pilot is irresponsible. He was something like 10ft away from hitting the water and he came towards it with a really high AoA which makes me think he's not in control of the situation. I can only speculate though so I'm curious what some of the more knowledgeable people around here think. Is that kind of margin really within the limits of piloting skill?

I thought you were talking about this video when you said old:

Oh Ye of little faith AH-64 Apache Crash (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4CQfaBGWSo)

However, this one does get a little bent. I would hate to have been the pilot.

For the AH-64 pilot, it's all fun and games till someone gets hurt.

Boys with toys. I was like that with my first car too...right before I flipped it end over end when I was 16. :tongue:

A lot of people miss the point of things like this. It's not whether you can do it or not, it's whether you should do it or not. One would think that a lot of these cases that they're deliberately operating outside briefed parameters.

"It's not how low can you get to the ground. It's how precise can you fly the airplane. There are a great many former friends of mine who are sadly no longer with us because they cut their margins too close." - Bob Hoover, whom I like to think knows a think or two about this aviation business.

From my own point of view, and along similar lines;

1) If you're not getting enough enjoyment from purely flying, within the regs, its time to do something else.

2) There's no such thing as being "good enough" to do silly things. The good pilots are the ones that know something's silly, and don't do it!

That's about all I have on that one.

Ug, looked like he was going to ride it out until the fire got too much.

Ahh I believe this was a guy I was in flying training with back in my RAF days. His nickname was NikNak after the character in Man with the golden gun! Just finished a flight safety lecture on this very accident this afternoon in fact, and we've looked around that very aircraft. The fire damage is really strange, right down one side of the aircraft and the other side barely a singe mark!

If he did do it on purpose, he's an idiot. Sure we can all pull stuff like that off in the simulator when we're fooling around... Course we also screw it up about 1 in 3 times and the screen turns red. My life's worth more than that.
